Photo 1975. City of Aspen files. This home was built for John W. Atkinson, partner in Holbrook and Atkinson, freighters and ore haulers. Atkinson also owned a brickyard in town. This house is representative of the family/home environment of a successful businessperson in Aspen during the silver mining era. In March of 1880, B. Clark Wheeler incorporated the Aspen Town and Land Company with the financing of eastern capitalists. Initially, Aspen was a typical mining camp, with tents and crude log structures for businesses and homes. Snow and spectacular mountains would provide the resources in the 1930s for Aspen to begin development as an international ski resort.
