Posted by Becki Robins. Yay it's raining in California! If it carries on like this, the drought might actually end sometime in the next couple of years. Of course, I really dislike rain most of the time, but I'm not going to say so out loud. We really need the rain. The earliest known occupants of Lebanon were the Phoenicians, a maritime culture that lived in the region for almost a millennium. Lebanon was later occupied by the Romans, and then by the Arabs, and the result of all that indecisiveness ...

Posted by Becki Robins. I didn't set anything on fire this week, but I did cause a minor explosion. So you know, hopefully that will be entertaining reading. Macanese cuisine is, of course, heavily influenced by its past association with Portugal. The result is a cuisine that's actually quite unique, because it's largely based on the only marginally-successful attempts of Portuguese settlers to replicate their traditional dishes with Chinese ingredients. Posted by Becki Robins. This year's flu shot is only 23% effective. What does that mean exactly? That it's 23% effective against all flu viruses? Or it only protects against 23% of the flu viruses that are out there? I don't know really, but I can tell you this: it was zero percent effective for us. Except for my husband, who was the only one of us who didn't get the flu shot. For him, it was 100% effective. Figure that one out. Awbari, Libya. Travel by Stove: Recipes from Lorraine and Alsace, France
http://travelbystove.blogspot.com/2015/03/recipes-from-lorraine-and-alsace-france.html
Recipes from Lorraine and Alsace, France. Posted by Becki Robins. The problem is it really seemed like a wasted opportunity to not. Use the frog's legs for Travel by Stove. So I skipped way, way ahead and prepared them for Lorraine and Alsace, France. But here's the funny part, it was so long ago now that I actually forgot that I did it, and so a couple of weeks ago I cooked another meal from Lorraine and Alsace, France. That's two meals from the same region. Hmmm. Culinarily-speaking, Lorraine and Alsac...

Recipes from Lorraine and Alsace, France (Part Two). Posted by Becki Robins. OK, so the bad news is, I missed last week's posting because of spring break. So I am officially about five weeks behind in actually posting all the meals that I cook. Gah. The good news is, I already told you about Lorraine and Alsace, France in the last posting. Because remember? This was a two part entry. The whole "I cooked that meal two years ago and forgot about it" thing. Paysage de l'Aisne, France. Photo by Franck Vervial.

Posted by Becki Robins. Look, I'm on "L! That's not quite halfway through the alphabet, but it sure is close. Yay, progress. OK let's talk about Laos. We Americans are quite familiar with Asian food—we love our Chinese take-out, and sushi, and Thai food, and Vietnamese and Korean. Although there's a pretty good argument to be made that our Asian favorites are nothing like authentic, but there you go. VangViang, Laos. Photo by Taylor Miles. Travel by Stove: Recipes from Luxembourg

Posted by Becki Robins. I am happy to report that this week’s meal was not the comedy of errors that last week’s meal was, though that does generally make for less entertaining reading. In fact this week’s meal was actually fairly painless, so, sorry about that. Grand-Duché de Luxembourg. Photo by Antonio Ponte. Travel by Stove: The List
http://travelbystove.blogspot.com/p/the-list.html
Here it is, the list I'm working from (in alphabetical order). This list does actually evolve; for example when I first hit on this idea I had the United Kingdom listed as a single country, and have since divided it into three parts (England, Scotland and Wales) since I think each of those regions has a distinct cuisine that I couldn't possibly do justice to under just one blog entry. Akuteitsarsh (Chicken in Peanut Sauce). 8226; Kofta Challow (Lamb Meatballs). 8226; Afghani Naan Bread. 8226; Date Cookies.
