Just a girl: Quick Catch Up
http://just-a-girl-jennie.blogspot.com/2008/07/quick-catch-up.html
The life of just another girl trying to make it in science. Thursday, July 3, 2008. On west coast now. Husband drove the whole way. We went over 2000 miles in two days, stopping in Wyoming Monday night to sleep from 11pm to 5am. Feel like I'm on vacation but really would like to find a place to live, resubmit (and submit) manuscripts and finish revised dissertation. Will likely not be reading 85 entries in google reader. I don't feel like a doctor yet, even though everyone is congratulating me. Good luck...
Thoughts on academia, hoops, and randomness: Settling In
http://phdballer.blogspot.com/2009/08/settling-in.html
Wednesday, August 12, 2009. Well, I am getting adjusted to life in my new postdoc location. Last week was mostly spent unpacking and getting various things started. My apartment is in decent shape, but there are plenty of things that have just been moved out of sight until I figure out where to put them. Recently I read two interesting posts that I want to keep track of. This commentary on the viewpoints of a journal editor. And, I like this presentation on how to get non-scientists interested in science.
Thoughts on academia, hoops, and randomness: Graduation Tomorrow!
http://phdballer.blogspot.com/2009/05/graduation-tomorrow.html
Saturday, May 16, 2009. Looking forward to officially receiving my PhD. My parents are in town (4th time in my 4 years here), which is nice - makes it sorta feel like I'm on vacation, without any research thoughts. Hopefully the rain holds off so we can do some things outside. Here are a couple of good year-end, summaries for people who just started the TT track - an answering of questions. About it and a chronological summary. Some good things to keep in mind, for sure. Great posts by others.
Thesis - with Children: July 2008
http://kidsndata.blogspot.com/2008_07_01_archive.html
Thesis - with Children. Thursday, July 31, 2008. Show Me the Test Scores. I am really getting sick of all the discussion about Janet Hyde's new data. The quote from Hyde's paper that some people seem to be having such an orgasm over:. If a particular specialty required mathematical skills at the 99th percentile, and the gender ratio is 2.0, we would expect 67% men in the occupation and 33% women. Yet today, for example, Ph.D. programs in engineering average only about 15% women. Just to get anectdotal, I...

Just a girl: January 2010
http://just-a-girl-jennie.blogspot.com/2010_01_01_archive.html
The life of just another girl trying to make it in science. Friday, January 22, 2010. I was just musing over a comment my boss made and about how much it bothers me that he does this. I wanted to muse out loud and remembered I have this blog that I technically retired from. Still, I'd like to know the thoughts of my internet friends about this-if you still tune in. So what do you think. Is it ok for him to talk this way about others? I feel like the message is just but the delivery is pompous and rude.

A quick update, the internal draft of the final report for the project I've written about the last two post is due on Friday, to my PI. I've worked really hard on it these past two days and am proud of myself but it still has a lot more that needs to be done. This week is really busy but I'll aim to post something next week to keep anyone who is still reading this updated. Wednesday, June 3, 2009. Client might be an imp...

Just a girl: Speaker
http://just-a-girl-jennie.blogspot.com/2009/07/speaker.html
The life of just another girl trying to make it in science. Wednesday, July 29, 2009. She is such a hard worker, she even worked while taking care of her mother,. Give her a break since she's been at home taking care of her mother. Or I don't know. But this is how big boss. Is, very personal. And into other people's personal business. Do you think gender had anything to do with it? I think I may need to revisit this in a post at some point in the near future. August 16, 2009 at 12:15 PM. And have a job w...

The life of just another girl trying to make it in science. Sunday, February 21, 2010. Sorry for being late-traffic you know. I've been to so many baby showers and I just want to let all the other attendee's know that I win at most games. I've never left a baby shower empty handed :). I just want to leave you with one piece of advice. Never forget to be grateful. Life will be difficult but always go back to the joy of your little one-if when they are the one being difficult. Sunday, 23 May 2010. Learning to write in scientific style. I don't know how this is in other countries, but here, there is a large discrepancy between what you learn is writing 'well' in secondary school and what is expected of students in terms of writing once they write scientific reports in University. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). I tend to prefer forward selection but some backward elimination can be necessary sometimes. stepwisegirl at gmail. View my complete profile. But I'm a sloth, really.
