An adventure into growing veg on an allotment. April 17, 2016. I’ve planted out all the broadbeans that recovered. These took up half the row. I still had some Crimson flowered broadbean seeds from last year so I finished off the double row with these. I’m hoping that I’ll see them in about a fortnight (I’ve never sown broad beans directly in the ground). They were lovely last year, such a pretty colour and they smelled fantastic. April 14, 2016. With all the rain this week I’d thought that the plo...

An adventure into growing veg on an allotment. Tonight’s the night. July 26, 2015. It’s here. The night I’ve been waiting patiently for. The night that I’ve been imagining over and over again in my head for weeks has finally arrived. Tonight, I’m making Raymond Blanc’s pea risotto. The peas at the allotment are finally ready for picking so just before tea time, I headed along to collect as many pods as I could so that I could make the risotto with the freshest peas possible. Needless to say, it was well ...

An adventure into growing veg on an allotment. August 2, 2015. August 2, 2015. It’s happened. It’s official. We’re harvesting vegetables! It’s sometimes hard to believe that only a few months ago, the vegetables on my plate for tea tonight were just little seedlings starting out in the big wide world. Garlic ready to be lifted. Garlic, fresh from the ground. The purple tinged bulbs of the Lautrec Wight garlic. Strawberries, potatoes and broad beans. Uchiki Kuri winter squash. Tonight’s the night. Interes...

An adventure into growing veg on an allotment. July 2, 2015. The warm weather this week has worked wonders for the allotment. On Wednesday morning, on my pre-work visit, I noticed the first of my strawberries starting to ripen and turn red. Not wanting to leave them in the car to sweat it out while I was at work, I decided to pop back along after work to pick them. Unfortunately the birds must’ve spotted them too because they’d completely disappeared by the time I got back! I’m making the framework...

An adventure into growing veg on an allotment. August 15, 2015. August 15, 2015. Having an allotment has taught me many things; patience, planning, adaptability, resourcefulness and above all else to expect the unexpected. This week my squash plants have been under attack. Not by slugs, or snails, or birds or badgers, not even by bugs or any other pumpkin loving creature. This attack was more stealthy. Meet my current nemesis….Powdery Mildew. Powdery mildew on a squash leaf. Early signs of powdery mildew.
