Exit Pupil

A diminutive but technical definition of Exit Pupil is the diameter of the shaft of light (expressed in millimeters) that exits a binocular’s eyepiece that can enter through your eye’s pupillary opening. Exit Pupil is calculated by dividing a binocular’s aperture by its magnification, e.g. 42mm / 8x (for an 8x42 binocular) = 5.25mm.

Eye Relief and Eyecup Design. When introduced to the realm of optical jargon, eye relief is a number shrouded in mystery for newcomers. So, as an optics specialist, what might I tell you about eye relief? One technical definition is the distance (expressed in millimeters) from the last surface of the lens of an eyepiece to the plane projected behind it where all the light rays of the exit pupil come into focus. That's a lot of optical terminology in just one sentence for non-techies.
Close Focus

Close focus refers to the nearest distance you can focus a binocular or spotting scope. Close focusing is especially useful when viewing butterflies, dragonflies, wildflowers, and other subjects at extremely close range. In binoculars, 3’ to 8’ is considered a good close focus for watching insects. Keep in mind that when you’re using a binocular at close focus the two circles will become farther apart. This is normal.

I have a lens with a 67 mm filter ring that I want to attach to the DCA. If I remove the 58mm adapter ring, 72 mm is too big for the adapter and 67mm is too small.
