Alpena Youth Sailing Team. Thursday, August 6, 2009. Lay day took us to the Royal Castle at Borgholm on the island of Oland. It was one of the most important strongholds in the the middle ages owing to the abundant limestone and the recent discovery of a method of burning limestone to make mortar which was shipped throughout Scandanavia and Europe. Despite the abundant history spanning 1000 years the AYRT still managed to have fun exploring the walls and shopping in the local village.

Alpena Youth Sailing Team. Friday, July 31, 2009. ROUGH SAILING ON THE BALTIC. With winds of 20-25 knots and 200 miles of fetch across the Baltic Sea the AYST was undaunted. After the second race and winds over 30 they were "tired". But at the end of the day they had hung in (or out in hobbles as the case was) and are placed in the mid fleet with smiles and determination headed into day 2.
