Posted on June 30, 2016. Here is my attempt to guide writers and/or illustrators into the wide world of publication. Or, at the very least, in the right direction. My first #SCBWI Award. This piece won Honorable Mention at the #NJSCBWI (New Jersey Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators) conference this past weekend, and I feel so lucky! I will arise and go now in watercolor, graphite and digital, 11 x 17. Thank you so much to the Jury. Hard work is starting to pay off, and it feels awesome. I had trouble picking myself up off the floor when the venerable David Wiesner. An amazing conference. I look forward to attending again next year. This painting be...

Being a Writer/Illustrator – duh VO jack
http://www.dvojack.com/being-a-writerillustrator
Posted on July 5, 2015. Listening to the illicit sounds of 5th of July fireworks. When I was a small, wee, slip of a lass, I went through a period where I made my mom draw for me. It wasn’t that I stopped drawing; she was just better than I was. Sometimes I made her draw the hands for my people. Sometimes it was the whole people. I have a memory of sitting behind her on the couch and watching her progress. To draw something or I. It’s a little funny that I’ve never automatically gone to pictu...Picture b...

Posted on June 23, 2015. This is actually a post about editing. It will all make sense later. There are certain segments of the population for whom word count is not a caution but a. I am one of those people. 90k is like a sneeze, man. The first time I tried NaNoWriMo, I finished in the first five days. The only year I didn’t win was when I just stopped. I used WriteOrDie. To see if I could write a thousand words in fifteen minutes. The answer is yes. (Just don’t ask about the typos.). Meant for publicat...

Posted on June 25, 2015. The Morass: The Last Five Years. Stage One: Write a Manuscript. 2010 marks the official year I decided to begin writing THE SPECTACULAR. Before I could do that, I knew I needed an arsenal full of knowledge. You can’t do historical, even historical fantasy, without the tools to build the world. Seriously, nothing feeds you quite like research. So research I did. Stage Two: Defy Reality. Stage Three: Face Reality. Method (which unfortunately is not a word count shrinking machine) a...
