Fiberglassing the Deck | Building the microBootlegger strip kayak

Building the microBootlegger strip kayak. The story of a tandem canoe, or is it a kayak? I won’t bore you with the extended fairing, sanding, filling, fairing steps between the last post and now. Suffice it to say that it went much quicker and easier as I did not uncover any hidden surprises. Caused by insufficient clamping pressure and bead and cove edges. Nick recommends making a putty out of sanding dust and epoxy. Caption: The deck fiberglassed with one coat of epoxy. Tip of the Day:. This entry was ...

Fitting the External Stems | Building the microBootlegger strip kayak

Building the microBootlegger strip kayak. The story of a tandem canoe, or is it a kayak? Fitting the External Stems. Yet again, I find myself having to proclaim, I’m not dead yet, only resting. Actually I have not even been resting, just a bit lazy about posting progress. And oh yes, there is progress. I’ll break the last few months down into multiple posts for you so as not to rush things. To prepare the hull, I first cut away the interlocked strip ends and planed and sanded the ends flat. The next day,...

May | 2009 | Building the microBootlegger strip kayak

Building the microBootlegger strip kayak. The story of a tandem canoe, or is it a kayak? 30 May, 2009. Once I belt sanded the strips, I found they were flexible enough to fit the curves I had. However, this is a big, open cockpit and your mileage may vary. I used a few dots of hot glue to hold the strips in place temporarily and more wood glue to hold them there permanently. Roughly one dot of hot glue every 3 inches of wood glue. Caption: The end result. Tip of the Day:. Make sure your strips are straig...

The Rolling Bevel | Building the microBootlegger strip kayak
https://microbootlegger.wordpress.com/2009/04/09/the-rolling-bevel
Building the microBootlegger strip kayak. The story of a tandem canoe, or is it a kayak? There are two approaches to fitting the edges of strip planks together. The bead and cove approach is the one I have been using until now, for all of the reasons outlined here. However, when I began sanding the hull I was dismayed to uncover all kinds of gaps in my stripping. So, I have elected to complete the deck using the other style of stripping, the rolling bevel. In short, the strips are square instead of i...

Fiberglassing the Hull | Building the microBootlegger strip kayak
https://microbootlegger.wordpress.com/2009/03/16/fiberglassing-the-hull
Building the microBootlegger strip kayak. The story of a tandem canoe, or is it a kayak? Once the last of the repairs were made and all of the sanding was complete, it was time to fiberglass the exterior of the hull. Eventually the hull will have a layer of fiberglass on the outside and on the inside, but for now I am only doing the outside. 8221; from the West System website. Of all the things I read, this was one of the most helpful. I did not need helpers for these coats. Tip of the day:. Do not try a...

Shaping the Coaming Lip | Building the microBootlegger strip kayak

Building the microBootlegger strip kayak. The story of a tandem canoe, or is it a kayak? Shaping the Coaming Lip. Once all the glue had dried it was time to shape the coaming lip. First I cut off the excess strips above the coaming using a flush cut saw. I used this saw from Carbatec. Because it is a flush cut saw, I could run the saw along the coaming lip as a guide without damaging the lip. Caption: The coaming lip after sawing off the tops of the vertical strips. Building the microBootlegger strip kayak. The story of a tandem canoe, or is it a kayak? Disaster and Disaster Recovery. 7 May, 2009. It turns out that when I was taping. All the form edges I neglected to tape the tops of the temporary internal stems at the bow and the stern. As a result the strips (especially the centre cedar strip) glued themselves to the stem forms. This required lots of prying, chipping, levering and praying to get off. Fiberglassing the Coaming | Building the microBootlegger strip kayak
https://microbootlegger.wordpress.com/2009/06/01/fiberglassing-the-coaming
Building the microBootlegger strip kayak. The story of a tandem canoe, or is it a kayak? The order of the steps in which to build the coaming varies a bit depending on who you listen to. I chose to glass the outside of the coaming as the next step. Before fiberglassing, I created a fillet. Thickening the mix so that it does not run and lightening the colour slightly. It seemed to work well enough, but I can’t find the original reference so proceed at your own risk. Caption: Stern of the cockpit. Address ...
