While the potential is promising, the facility itself is reminiscent of the early days of operation. Where are we now? The airport serves as an education and public resource and is part of the larger Ohio Aeronautics Campus (OAC). Equipped with an aircraft fleet, flight simulators, air traffic control, weather station, and communications and navigation systems, the OAC is host to numerous aviation and non-aviation classwork and research projects. The Airport is a study area for students in aeronautical engineering, civil engineering, city and regional planning, industrial design, geography, and chemistry.

Where did it all begin? Just 14 years after the Wright Brothers’ first flight, the Ohio State School of Aeronautics opened on May 12, 1917. The Aeronautics building was placed at the southeast corner of West 19th Avenue and Neil Avenue. There the first squadron of cadets built the aircraft and then rolled them down the hill to the field just east of the Olentangy River, where flight tests and training would ensue. The first plane landed at the new airport on November 5, 1942.
