A Year in Indonesia

A Year in Indonesia. Thursday, June 21, 2012. Menarilah dan Terus Tertawa". Things I Will Miss About Indonesia:. 1 Javanese dance and the traditional arts. 2 Hearing the call to prayer. 4 Eating with my hands. I also helped another inbound haggle for a bag that I paid about 2/3 more for several months ago. That's a bit disappointing, because I didn't know the right price back then. But you live and you learn. Why are there not traditional markets in Minnesota? I'll miss that kind of shopping. I Am So....

A Year in Indonesia: September 2011

http://awillgohs-indonesia.blogspot.com/2011_09_01_archive.html

A Year in Indonesia. Tuesday, September 27, 2011. Ulang Tahun dan Malioboro. Walk ways to the eating areas. The view from our table. Street vendors selling candles, roses, rosaries, and other souveniers. Building right next to St. Mary's Cave. The washing station is to the right of this creek, on the lower level. The shrine is up the stairs from there, on the same level as the upper bridge. Malioboro, from the end of the main street. Wednesday, September 21, 2011. Aksara Jawa, then my name written twice.

A Year in Indonesia: January 2012

http://awillgohs-indonesia.blogspot.com/2012_01_01_archive.html

A Year in Indonesia. Sunday, January 29, 2012. Terapi Ikan, Pantai, Tari Srimpi. It feels like it's been forever since I've last blogged, though three weeks doesn't sound that long. Nothing extremely new or exciting has happened since my last post, but I'll fill you in on how life has been in the desa :). There was also a Javanese holiday in January called Bekakak. The fruit tower being carried up Batu Gamping. Did you try it? And so this was a little twisted joke of his- no one told me that they eat dog...

A Year in Indonesia: February 2012

http://awillgohs-indonesia.blogspot.com/2012_02_01_archive.html

A Year in Indonesia. Saturday, February 11, 2012. It’s annoying how easily time slips by- it has already been over a month since I’ve last posted. We have a lot to catch up on, so let’s get right to business, starting with February. As for the Chinese New Year, m. Most of the time a ragam will end with. Both feet back on the ground, but not always. The hardest by far, though, is memorizing the ragam names. If you write down the first part of the tari srimpi pandelori routine, it looks like this:. But it ...

A Year in Indonesia: May 2012

http://awillgohs-indonesia.blogspot.com/2012_05_01_archive.html

A Year in Indonesia. Wednesday, May 30, 2012. This is a blog post a few months in the making: caranya membatik. How to batik. I can't remember exactly how this all got started, but one day I went to a batik shop in Yogya with my second host father and came home to Karangjati with a bunch of supplies. After that I spent a good number of hours after school drawing patterns on cloth with melted wax (called malan) using a batiking tool called a canting. Now for the dying process. Saturday, May 19, 2012.

A Year in Indonesia: Bali

http://awillgohs-indonesia.blogspot.com/2012/04/bali.html

A Year in Indonesia. Saturday, April 28, 2012. Just got back from Bali yesterday morning, and I figured if I don’t get a blog up this weekend I never will, so here is the news! The trip to Bali was with the freshman class at SMKI (which happens every year). Bali is also called Pulau Mimpian or “Island of Dreams”, and it was indeed very beautiful. I thought the best part was all the Hindu temples- they are everywhere. Temple surrounded by ocean. The SMKI Bali karawitan performances were mesmerizing- you c...

Vida Brasileira: Weekend Update

http://cathlewis.blogspot.com/2011/10/weekend-update.html

Tuesday, October 11, 2011. The majority of my weekends so far in Brazil have been spent catching up on sleep, eating meals with my extended families, and going to birthday parties and BBQs with friends from my class. Here is a very brief update on my past two weekends, which have been much different than usual! October 1st was my 19th birthday, and my host parents were extraordinarily kind and threw a lovely party (I told them it was the first time I've had a birthday party in about ten years! BASTARDO P...

Vida Brasileira: School, school, and more school

http://cathlewis.blogspot.com/2011/09/school-school-and-more-school.html

Thursday, September 8, 2011. School, school, and more school. One of the most common questions I'm being asked here is about the college application process in the United States. It's always a bit of a struggle to explain because it is so different from the process here in Brazil. Are you going into? It's also not uncommon to not. Pass Vestibular (especially if you want to go into a field like Medicine). There are specific schools here for those who haven't passed the test to attend - these schools r...

http://cathlewis.blogspot.com/2011/08/past-few-years-i-have-been-lucky-enough.html

Wednesday, August 24, 2011. How nice would it be to be Emma's age again - everything is new and exciting; you'd learn something completely new everyday! You're right - but think of how exhausting. That would be.". Being an exchange student is essentially the same as being a toddler again: everything is new and exciting, you're given special attention, and yet not knowing everything (or sometimes it feels like not knowing anything. Becomes an incredibly draining task at times. There will be 32 students in...

Vida Brasileira: Getting Here

http://cathlewis.blogspot.com/2011/08/getting-here.html

Tuesday, August 9, 2011. My parents sent me off from the airport (Mark had his All State Choir concert and James was at St. Olaf watching), and despite a few fits of tears, everything went smoothly. From Minneapolis I traveled to Houston, and from Houston I had an overnight flight to São Paulo. But with a little bit of help I found my way and was able to calm down quite a bit. My family at the airport. First day of school. And then am going to Londrina for a special mass and dinner. Thursday night I ...

Vida Brasileira: Brazilian Noms

http://cathlewis.blogspot.com/2011/09/brazilian-food-aka-how-i-gained-40.html

Wednesday, September 28, 2011. My family generally eats papaya, toast, cake or cookies for breakfast. This is, of course, in addition to coffee, which is, indeed, as good here as I was hoping it would be (probably partially because everyone over-sugars their coffee - delicious). Lunch is the big meal of the day here in Brazil. At around 1:00, it seems as though all families in Brazil are able to get together and share a meal before heading back to school or work. Lunches at home are generally like this:.

Review: Total War: Attila. March 26, 2015. Total War: Attila is the sequel to recent sequel: Rome 2. Rome 2 was plagued with issues from release, and widely regarded as a failed experiment by long standing developer Creative Assembly. The game takes some of the more successful elements of Rome 2 and expands on them. It also reintroduces a number of features which were present in previous ‘Total War’ outings but lacking in Rome 2. The horde mechanic is well done, where players entire civilisation moves wi...
