A year at the edge

Wednesday, 5 September 2012. 5th September: The end of my year at the edge. I complete my year at the edge with an uneventful last walk and collection. Both the landscape and my finds are disappointly unremarkable. But I am accompanied by photographer Dave Wise (currently on residency with flyintheface) who. With a pinhole portrait of me and the mad black dog: timeless like the debris that washes up from the sea. High tide: 13.32 hrs 2.9m. Low tide: 19.38 hrs 0.6m. Time of arrival: 13.17 hrs. A year at the edge: October 2011

http://www.ayearattheedge.blogspot.com/2011_10_01_archive.html

Tuesday, 25 October 2011. A grey day with big, steely seas. There is an unusual amount of seaweed washed up on the shore. A mysterious triangle of posts has emerged from the shingle north of the works - what purpose do they serve? Meanwhile, beyond the barricades, the diggers are busy filling the geo-textile bags with shingle and sand and banking them up beneath the cliff. Will be a useful resource for my next exhibition. High tide: 08.48 hrs 3m; low tide 15.07 hrs 0.3m. Time of arrival: 12.05 hrs. Subsc...

A year at the edge: September 2011

http://www.ayearattheedge.blogspot.com/2011_09_01_archive.html

Tuesday, 27 September 2011. Barricades have appeared on the beach, dissecting the shingle and cutting off the beach to the north. This is my favourite area to walk and will be inaccessible due to sea defence work until at least December. Ironically, huge quantities of shingle have recently returned to the beach, vastly increasing the work necessary in order to install the defences. Nature plays cruel tricks. Tidal pickings are low and I am able to travel light on my way home. Time of arrival: 17.01hrs.

flyintheface: death by plastic

http://flyintheface.blogspot.com/2013/03/death-by-plastic.html

Saturday, 9 March 2013. Today's news provides graphic evidence of the harm plastics in our oceans cause to marine life: a sperm whale has washed up in southern Spain with 17kg of plastics in its stomach. Thick transparent plastic sheeting, 9m of rope, hosepipe, plastic flower pots, a clothes hanger, an ice-cream tub and bits of mattress were among the items which caused the whale's death. flyintheface: October 2013

http://flyintheface.blogspot.com/2013_10_01_archive.html

Sunday, 13 October 2013. A good place for a nuclear power station. I was devastated to see the coastal erosion at Thorpeness today. A single tide early on Saturday morning carried away literally thousands of tonnes of shingle in the strong northeasterly winds, leaving several houses vulnerable. My favourite footpath to the north end of the beach was severed, leaving a sheer 2.5 meter drop, and the sea defences (installed under the shingle just a couple of years ago) were suddenly stripped bare.

flyintheface: January 2012

http://flyintheface.blogspot.com/2012_01_01_archive.html

Tuesday, 17 January 2012. I have a new helper when collecting on the beach. well, he's not exactly helping. In training. (believe me, he needs it! Our mad pup (who is nearly old enough to know better) now likes to collect plastics on the beach too. Here you can see him with a dustpan he found. but then lost. With helpers like this, I am finding it hard to have enough hands to collect and carry rubbish, take photos and. Prevent strangers from being 'bounced'! Life can be tough on the beach.

Thursday, 29 August 2013. Sweet NOthings on the beach. Just returned from the best swim of the year: beach to myself (apart from the usual mad dog) and a warm steely sea. And no rubbish on the beach - just one sweet NOthing. That's the way I like it. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). http://flyintheface.blogspot.com/2013_11_01_archive.html

Wednesday, 13 November 2013. I have just had a wonderful weekend exhibiting Pilotage,. A collaboration with Ian McMillan for the Aldeburgh Poetry Festival. At our book signing for Pilotage: collected works. My half hour of fame; it felt so good.). Ian performed his short poem inspired by the fragment of a danger sign we found washed up on the beach near Sizewell. But how, we were asked, did we know it was part of a danger sign? Mightn't it instead be a sign for MANGETOUT from a greengrocer's?

flyintheface: January 2013

http://flyintheface.blogspot.com/2013_01_01_archive.html

Wednesday, 23 January 2013. Since moving to our woodland home 11 years ago, we have done everything we can to provide a good habitat for wildlife. Some wildlife (the barn owl and grass snakes) is more welcome than others (abundant moles and daily herds of fallow deer) - but where should we draw the line? But this newest discovery certainly takes the biscuit. This mouse and its friends must have laboured for days to create this hoard - there was nearly a kilo of grain in my boots! It's not what we feed ou...

Wednesday, February 03, 2010. What do I have on Hold? First of all, I am a big fan of reserving items online. You can take your time and search at your leisure. It's kind of like going on a hunt. If hunters were bespectacled nerds like me who want to read and watch dvds for free. Now - on to the burning question I imagine everyone reading this wants to know - what exactly do I currently have on hold at the library?
