Sunday, December 11, 2016. When they go low, we go high.". Surprisingly, Mrs. Obama's noble manifesto turns out to be good advice for exploring the Battenkill State Forest. As I mentioned in an earlier post,. Across a small stream-bed you'll see Battenkill Valley Outdoors. They are a great resource for adventures in this part of Washington County and nearby Vermont. They outfit river trips and provide shuttles, operate a retail store and even offer lodging. Last time I checked Don and Lisa Otey w...Today...

Sunday, July 24, 2016. Have you heard people say they'll move mountains to accomplish their goals? I guess such intense drive is admirable, but I draw the line at small hills. Maybe low knolls would be even more accurate. The difference is that this talk of moving mountains is metaphoric bluster and bravado, while I'm actually leveling a real hill in pursuit of the goal of comfortable cows. Old geological books and map. A blurry (sorry) map of surficial geology. My sand dune: this hill has got to go!

wash wild: Meet the Meetinghouses
http://wcny.blogspot.com/2016/06/meet-meetinghouses.html
Saturday, June 11, 2016. But there's a bright side? To this farming frenzy. Things break. Which means you have to get parts. Which entails a trip to Washington County where the equipment dealerships are located. I was heading down Rt. 40 on just such a trip, thinking it was silly to waste all this time and gas on a flat tire (or was it a dead battery? A blown hydraulic hose? About 13,000 years ago the North Meetinghouse would have been water front property. A cold, muddy post-glacial lake with chunks...

Sunday, May 8, 2016. Transits of Mercury and Venus don't happen as often. The next one for Mercury is in 2019. Venus had a pair of transits in 2004 and 2012 but the next one won't happen until 2117. I hope to be able to retire by then and have time to watch it. Maybe someday soon colonists on Mars will be able to see an Earth transit. Probably the best option is to view the transit online at NASA's website. That should make both your ophthalmologist and the local fire department happy. You're going to li...

http://wcny.blogspot.com/2014/12/gift-of-new-skete.html
Friday, December 26, 2014. Gift of New Skete. I'm dreaming of a wild Christmas.". No white Christmas this year. Two days of warmth and rain washed that away. Our family tradition of a holiday ski tour had to take a break although Gwenne and Holly did manage some skiing (and splashing) on Christmas Eve. The Monks have over four miles of marked trails on their forested hillside. I've wanted to come back since going on a guided outing lead by Sue Van Hook several years ago. Monday, February 29, 2016. A River Runs To It. With the creation of the state forest came new ways to enjoy. I've run and skied and bushwhacked both along the river and in the high hills beyond 313. And there's no better place to launch long bike tours through out southern Washington County and into Vermont. When you come back hot and sweaty, the river is there to cool and soothe you. If this post's title sounds familiar, it's because I've just finished reading Norman Maclean's A. River Runs Through It.
