Across the Bay: Two Items on Hezbollah

http://beirut2bayside.blogspot.com/2010/06/two-items-on-hezbollah.html

Tuesday, June 22, 2010. Two Items on Hezbollah. Here are my two latest pieces on Hezbollah. The first. From last week, analyzes aspects of Nasrallah's speech on the anniversary of Khomeini's death. The second. Out today, looks into Hezbollah's financial networks worldwide, in light of two recent arrests of Hezbollah operatives in Ohio and Paraguay. Posted by Tony Badran at 10:23 AM. Thursday, June 24, 2004. After I wrote my criticism of Cole's post on the UCI graduation ceremony, I realized that I left out something important. It also came up in discussions I had with friends and colleagues about the post and about religion in general. What I'm referring to is Cole's statement that by wearing specific religious paraphernalia with Islamic inscriptions, the students at UCI were "sacralizing their secular learning.". Across the Bay: Musa Sadr and the Islamic Republican Party

http://beirut2bayside.blogspot.com/2010/09/musa-sadr-and-islamic-republican-party.html

Wednesday, September 08, 2010. Musa Sadr and the Islamic Republican Party. This week is on Musa Sadr's disappearance in Libya 32 years ago. I briefly note a couple of quotes by some authors about the possible role played by Khomeini and some of his lieutenants in the disappearance, while exploring the politics and history behind it. You can also consult Peter Theroux's The Strange Disappearance of Imam Moussa Sadr. No, have a good trip and give my regards to Imam Sadr,' was the reply. Husseini answer...

Across the Bay: An end to the Syria pipe dream

http://beirut2bayside.blogspot.com/2011/05/end-to-syria-pipe-dream.html

Thursday, May 19, 2011. An end to the Syria pipe dream. An end to the Syria pipe dream. At last it would seem the Obama administration is recognizing that its policy of hope toward Bashar al-Assad was a pipe dream. Now the administration needs to formulate an entirely new Syria policy to match this conclusion, no matter how reluctant it may be to abandon its old paradigm.". Posted by Tony Badran at 5:37 PM. Across the Bay: October 2004

http://beirut2bayside.blogspot.com/2004_10_01_archive.html

Saturday, October 30, 2004. As soon as I heard of the Lancet report which claimed that about 100,000 Iraqi civilians have died as a result of the war, I had a wager with a friend that this ridiculous report (see why below) will be picked up by the usual birdbrain fools and preached as gospel truth. Speaking of nitwits, Juan Cole, Mr. "Informed Comment," Prof. "I convey very complex social and intellectual realities". And hot air), has jumped. Hence the following comment:. I see, so the number of Saddam's...

LEBANONESQUE: April 2006

http://lebanonesque.blogspot.com/2006_04_01_archive.html

Impressions, views, and steam-blowing by a lonesome cowboy. Friday, April 14, 2006. Short Stories of the 75-76 War. Yesterday, April 13, found many Lebanese bloggers trading stories about the civil war. And with Ecce Libano adding pressure, I had to blog. Two anecdotes that in my mind illustrate the horrible, the half-way decent, and the touching found in all wars. The militiamen asked for ID papers (which in Lebanon have an item revealing one's religion/sect). What are you doing here? I don’t know how h...

Impressions, views, and steam-blowing by a lonesome cowboy. Sunday, September 25, 2005. Pro-Palestinian, Pro-Lahoud Lebanese, Speak Up! Here we go again. It is like nothing happened in the past 30 years of Lebanese history. Palestinian arms and men are coming into Lebanon. Blogger said (full exchange there. To support Palestinians, do we have to start out with a disclaimer that discusses our unending support for Lebanon? YES, YOU DO. Given recent Lebanese history, you need to be very specific.". Impressions, views, and steam-blowing by a lonesome cowboy. Thursday, August 04, 2005. I am speechless. Watch the video (arabic with english subtitles). HERE. Thank God for the SANE Mufti. Watch also the (undeserved) deference both the interviewer and the Tyre Mufti give to the Mount-Lebanon Mufti. 1) As expected, the fanatical nut is more certain and assured in his demeanor. Impressions, views, and steam-blowing by a lonesome cowboy. Sunday, February 19, 2006. Lahoud: Fly Me to Khartoum. You decide to go to a meeting of the Arab League of course. (That's the annual meeting of the Arab League March 28, in Kartoum, Sudan.). Because the only thing you can do is try to freeze time. And what better way to do that than to go to an event where NOTHING happens, NOBODY cares what happens, NO ONE registers what happens other than some overpaid self-important League bureaucreep. LEBANONESQUE: July 2005

Impressions, views, and steam-blowing by a lonesome cowboy. Monday, July 25, 2005. Tear Up This Pact, Mr. Assad. Is egging on the Syrian government to abrogate all treaties signed between Lebanon and Syria. I say: "Quick, LET'S, before they change their minds". The weekly almost surely has the blessing of Syria's government. And I am pretty sure the Syrian government doesn't want to abrogate anything. But that is how they play the pressure game, against our hapless "leaders". After the World Court found ...

Sunday, August 17, 2014. A least costly but efficient stimulus for the Lebanese economy. So what can the government do about this situation that has been allowed to fester for over 20 years? Impressions, views, and steam-blowing by a lonesome cowboy. Wednesday, December 28, 2005. Israel Retaliates: Saniora Do Your Job. Katyusha's fired over north Israel. Israel bombs Palestinians in Naameh. Palestinian groups and Hezballah deny firing on Israel. The US, EU and UN will urge caution on all sides? The suspense is killing me. I just want to focus on one simple aspect, but that aspect pervades the whole (failed) approach to the problem. Here is what PM Saniora said after the Israeli attack. I als...

http://lebanonesque.blogspot.com/2005_06_01_archive.html

Impressions, views, and steam-blowing by a lonesome cowboy. Wednesday, June 29, 2005. I hate to repeat the obvious, but somehow in Lebanon, the obvious is not grasped by many. This is a bit of a "cheap" post, it is my reply to other bloggers from this post. I don't want discuss the technical details of the VAT, which may or may not be a good thing in Lebanon. I disagree when Steve says it's a good sign we are discussing details. We cannot shove things under the rug that is always a recipe for disaster.

Impressions, views, and steam-blowing by a lonesome cowboy. Saturday, November 26, 2005. Fun with Amr Mussa and the Arab League. More hilarity from the useless Arab League and its chief, Amr Mussa. The story is from Naharnet and it's very short. I'm posting the full Naharnet story. With my own comments [bracketed]. Arab League Refuses Isolating Syria [Title]. Very good Amr, stick with your specialty. The Arab League is good at one thing and one thing only: refusing, saying "NO" to everything.]. Amr as a ...

Beirut, Beijing, Beyond and Back. Why France should NOT ban the burka. June 22, 2009. This piece is a response to an article. There are several points of contention with the arguments of those who see the banning of the burka as a desirable move. Firstly, there is the assumption that women wear the burka because they are “forced” into it. The article mentions that if a pending government inquiry into the matter found that the burka was forced it would contradict republican principles . Thirdly, ‘cu...
