FIELD NOTES

Saturday, July 29, 2017. British Columbia - Canada 2017. My connection with Canada started about 27 years ago when I was posted there with the British Army. Since then I have lived in two of their amazing provinces - Alberta 1992 - 1995 and British Columbia 2002 - 2011. Whilst living in Alberta I volunteered at the. Alberta Society for Injured Birds of Prey. And began learning bird banding. In BC I spent 9 wonderful years birding in some of the most pristine and breath taking environments. Visited two of...

FIELD NOTES: October 2014

http://birdingfieldnotes.blogspot.com/2014_10_01_archive.html

Sunday, October 26, 2014. Today I did a quick (1:40 minute) blast down to Beachy Head to catch up with a much wanted bird: Red-breasted Flycatcher! This regular migrant had eluded me until now. This individual has been frequenting a few bushes about 1/2 mile west of Beachy Head Hotel for a few days so I chanced my luck and won. As you can see it put on a real show and I was so happy I had my Kowa iphone adapter. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). The British Trust for Ornithology. Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust.

FIELD NOTES: August 2014

http://birdingfieldnotes.blogspot.com/2014_08_01_archive.html

Monday, August 18, 2014. Charlesworth and Mooney - UK Birding Adventure! Some English cuisine at the Anchor Pub. It's been nine years since I last saw my good friend and old birding pal Chris Charlesworth; so we had a lot of catching up to do! Chris, owner of Avocet Tours. And a senior leader with Limosa Birding and Wildlife Tours. Was attending the Rutland Bird Fair. Chris Charlesworth and Rich Mooney - Texas 2005. This scarce visitor to the British Isles had been reported on Rare Bird Alert. After gett...

FIELD NOTES: February 2015

http://birdingfieldnotes.blogspot.com/2015_02_01_archive.html

Saturday, February 14, 2015. Took a drive west on the M4 to Wales this morning. Picked up my good friend Stuart Clarke at 08:20 am and headed down to Forest Farm Country Park. Glamorgan. Today's target bird was Little Bunting. This NE European breeder of the taiga has been frequenting this location for the last week and as I have never seen this species before, I thought I would give it a go. Labels: Forest Farm Country Park. Sunday, February 8, 2015. The 'gen' was that the birds were doing circuits arou...

FIELD NOTES: Desert Wheatear

http://birdingfieldnotes.blogspot.com/2014/11/desert-wheatear.html

Friday, November 7, 2014. Finishing work at 12:30 on a Friday definitely has its benefits and I took full advantage today as I headed west from Surrey to Reculver Towers. In Kent. On arrival the reported ( Rare Bird Alert. Was hidden behind some rocks and with dark clouds threatening to stop play I felt somewhat un-optomistic. Luckily, my anxiety was exchanged for euphoria, as this scarce vagrant from North Africa made an appearance and gave me a few opportunities for a record shot! Other species of note.

FIELD NOTES: September 2014

http://birdingfieldnotes.blogspot.com/2014_09_01_archive.html

Sunday, September 7, 2014. Just up the road. On Wednesday (3/9/2104) I headed straight to my local patch after receiving a call from my birding pal Dave (Ginger) Baker informing me that there were four Whinchat. Showing at Papercourt Water Meadows. On arrival I found this individual (photo above) but couldn't locate the other three. This was my first. For my local area and also the first I have seen this year.thanks Dave! Another call from Dave on Saturday sent me on my way to Tice's Meadow.

Gyrfunken: February 2014

http://gyrfunken.blogspot.com/2014_02_01_archive.html

Because Abu said so. Wednesday, February 26, 2014. This morning we were at the Little Qualicum Estuary looking for the Northern Mockingbird. We found the mockingbird fairly easily, but while we were looking at it, a surprisingly aggressive Ring-necked Pheasant started following us around. It called, displayed, and would make short runs at us, approaching to about 2 meters away. A stunning bird, although I'm not sure how long it will last charging at humans! Tuesday, February 25, 2014. Gyrfunken: May 2014

http://gyrfunken.blogspot.com/2014_05_01_archive.html

Because Abu said so. Saturday, May 17, 2014. Although never as exciting as finding a "real" rarity,. Coming across a seriously out of range bird that is surely an escapee from someones aviary, is nonetheless interesting, and worth noting. Using the example of the Silver Pheasant population in Nanaimo, BC, one never knows when introduced exotics will begin breeding on their own in the wild, and perhaps even establish a lasting population. So, where did this bird come from? Wednesday, May 7, 2014. The hill...

Because Abu said so. Monday, November 19, 2012. Incredible Time To Be In Coastal BC. Over the past week, Donna and I have seen two incredibly rare birds here in coastal BC. Both new to the province, and one, only a second North American Record. First year Citrine Wagtail. Wow. We arrived in Comox at about 7:45 and had the bird by 8:15 or so. I spent the next few hours studying the bird through the telescope as it fed in wet grass at a field edge. What a spectacular bird! Subscribe to: Posts (Atom).

Gyrfunken: February 2013

http://gyrfunken.blogspot.com/2013_02_01_archive.html

Because Abu said so. Tuesday, February 19, 2013. There are large numbers. Of California Gulls passing NW over Moorecroft right now. Probably due to the unsettled weather, they are passing quite low over the park and they are vocalizing continually, which is typical when these birds migrate at lower elevations in the dark. It will be interesting to see if this movement continues after sunrise. Sunday, February 17, 2013. A Solution For Boundary Bay? Wednesday, February 13, 2013. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom).

Birding in Florida 2009

Birding in Florida 2009. A review of three weeks birding based in Orlando, Florida, USA from 16 February to 9 March 2009. Friday, 13 March 2009. Wonderful birds at wonderful sites. Four weeks in Florida. One week to get acclimatised, enjoy the sun and pool plus unwind after the awful weather in both Spain and the UK and then it was off to Daytona Beach. But first, what to see and where to go? Two special votes of thanks here. First to friend Andy Paterson. Our first visit was to the Emerald Marsh. Which ...
