Improvements to my air intake system. January 25, 2016. Since I bought this car, the air intake system has been a bit of a mess. Originally the exit from the PCV valve was routed to before the MAF. Except there was no PCV valve - just a pipe from the rocker cover to just behind the air filter. I sorted that out some time ago by fitting a PCV and routing it to just after the throttle body, and the car ran a lot better because of it. Over the last year or so (yes, that long! Update on my 1997 318is sedan. February 3, 2015. After several months of excessive noise due to the previously mentioned cracked exhaust manifold, my 1997 318is sedan is now fixed and quiet again. I had previously purchased a second hand exhaust manifold (A$100) and had it fitted by my usual mechanic. At the same time he also replaced the rear trailing arm bushes (parts were A$90 from clickableautomotive.com.au. As I suspected these were worn and the cause of the rear tyres only lasting around 5,000km.

Common problem with M50 vacuum connector. July 10, 2014. There's a common problem with the BMW M50 engines as fitted to the E36 320i and 325i, and the E34 520i and 525i. On the intake manifold there is a air pipe connection that over time can come loose. Then, usually when starting the car, this connection can blow off resulting in a large vacuum leak.
