Articulating burial process: Primary and secondary burials in the British and Middle Eastern Neolithic | Chronology and Identity

https://chronologyandidentity.wordpress.com/2015/03/01/articulating-burial-process-primary-and-secondary-burials-in-the-british-and-middle-eastern-neolithic

Bronze Age burials in northern England. Bronze Age burial: Datasets. Lancashire and surrounding area sites. Articulating burial process: Primary and secondary burials in the British and Middle Eastern Neolithic. March 1, 2015. Something which has often come up as a subject of discussion in prehistoric British archaeology is that of excarnation and secondary burial. What are these you ask? However, the terms excarnation and secondary burial have been used in the past sometimes indiscriminately (for the mo...

Bronze Age burials in northern England. Bronze Age burial: Datasets. Lancashire and surrounding area sites. July 26, 2014. I did manage to get an idea of age and sex for some sites, so I’m sure at some point I will be going back to do a full analysis. Above is a partial pelvis from Arbor Low. When looking at very fragmented remains (the norm for me) the most useful elements to find are teeth! Finally I shall leave you with a very large cat which is entirely unrelated to any of my research…. Is licensed u...

Bronze Age burials in northern England. Bronze Age burial: Datasets. Lancashire and surrounding area sites. Becoming a part-timer and other thoughts. January 25, 2015. I’ve not been posting on here as much as i’d like, I’ve been very busy with my full time job doing fieldwork. Work lately has been cold, dreary and extremely muddy! We had been hoping to do a second season late last summer but it sadly became too unsettled for us to go back. We are hoping that things will settle down in the near future.

Gonna Take You Higher! | mountains of meaning

https://mountainsofmeaning.com/2014/12/10/gonna-take-you-higher

Engagement with the upland archaeology and landscape of Cumbria and beyond. December 10, 2014. Gonna Take You Higher! So the remote Weather Stones on top of Boulsworth Hill came to mind, where I had found an eroded cup-and-ring, cups and grooves on a slab and at an altitude of over 500m this must surely be a candidate for the highest rock art in England! The sun begins to set – a crack between the worlds. Cold water glows gold. Now unlike the neighbouring Rombalds Moor, across the Aire Valley, this is a ...

Stone circles | mountains of meaning

https://mountainsofmeaning.com/category/stone-circles

Engagement with the upland archaeology and landscape of Cumbria and beyond. And did those feet…. May 12, 2015. But this being Bristol, there were connections drawn between rock art, superimposition and graffiti in Bedouin culture, so it was inevitable that local lad Banksy got a mention. Listening to sounds – lithophonics to be precise – the well known (at least on Tiree) Balaphetrish Gong Stone was rung, you can see this here. And since I am intrigued by this subject in relation to Cumbrian cup-marks an...

Bowland Caves excavation project blog. July 22, 2015. We don’t have a drone but we do have a 5 metre level staff. Two years ago we experimented. Despite the miserable drizzle, by the end of today we had most of the hillwash removed in the west side of this trench too and it looks as if the enclosure ditch does continue through the far side of the trench. Gone Daddy Gone | shelteringmemory

https://shelteringmemory.wordpress.com/2015/07/31/gone-daddy-gone

Bowland Caves excavation project blog. July 31, 2015. We are all done now with the fieldwork for another year. We spent today putting the turf back on all three trenches, tidying and cleaning and then driving everything back to Preston. Thanks very much to Clare who drove the kit van while I drove the bus. The wildlife of the day was a shrew we found hiding in the turves, unfortunately no picture of that either as it was much to quick for me. Where they are now two days away from finishing. Bowland Caves excavation project blog. September 7, 2015. Along with what seems like 3000 other archaeologists I have been in the west end of Glasgow last week for the European Association of Archaeologists annual conference. If you were trying to get into a pub on Byres Road on Friday night to watch Scotland play Georgia and couldn’t see the telly for intense looking people jabbering about metalwork or state-formation processes now you know why. Unlike last year at Istanbul. August 14, 2015. One thing t...

Bowland Caves excavation project blog. July 30, 2015. The Panic is On. Sampling and recording going on by the limestone pavement on Wednesday morning. George is trying to decide what precise colour of mud he is looking at by using a Munsell standard soil colour chart. This is basically a 200 version of the cards you get in DIY shops to show you paint colours. Except in a Munsell book they are all called things like ‘pale yellowish brown’ rather than ‘Mocha Sunrise’. Next post →. Worms off the Hook. Olaf&...

Bowland Caves excavation project blog. July 28, 2015. Promise me son, not to do the things I’ve done. The kids were meant to be back up on site this week but the weather was not Nintendo DS friendly. Like a lot of archaeologists I am not sure how I feel about my children becoming archaeologists in their turn. Entirely selfishly, I think that they might fancy something a bit more remunerative to keep me when I retire. It may be that they would also like something with a bit less rain. Next post →. Cosmic Balance | shelteringmemory

https://shelteringmemory.wordpress.com/2015/03/22/cosmic-balance

Bowland Caves excavation project blog. March 22, 2015. Even at this level we can get a lot out of this. This is all the stone tool finds from trench N sorted by type. Apart from giving a great sense of how much stuff there was in this pit complex, the other interesting thing is the way that all the blades (longer, thinner and more regular flakes) seem to cluster on the south-east side of the pit. We found last year. Next post →. Worms off the Hook. Professor Stephen Aldhouse Green. Top Posts and Pages.
