New Bern High School Naval Junior ROTC Sailing: Sailing... yes we go!
http://nbnjrotc-sail.blogspot.com/2015/04/sailing-yes-we-go.html
New Bern High School Naval Junior ROTC Sailing. Wednesday, April 15, 2015. Sailing. yes we go! This Tuesday was cool and breezy. The river was a solid whitecaps, the railroad bridge was a potentially hazardous lee shore. We had a small but well prepared group of cadets, and our small fleet of Javelins went out sailing! Due to the strong winds, we "reefed". The mainsails as we hoisted them. This makes the task slightly more complex. A sail is a way of making it smaller. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom).

New Bern High School Naval Junior ROTC Sailing: Docking Lesson 1... stopping would be nice
http://nbnjrotc-sail.blogspot.com/2011/05/docking-lesson-1-stopping-would-be-nice.html
New Bern High School Naval Junior ROTC Sailing. Thursday, May 19, 2011. Docking Lesson 1. stopping would be nice. Learning how to GO is obviously one of the first steps, but when you think about it, learning to STOP is just as important. Maybe more so. Here's a boat sailing along on a beam reach. The skipper turns slightly away from the wind, and eases sails out as far as they'll go. Is the boat going to stop? And when the boat is angled downwind then it will be pulled forward. If the boat turns a little...

New Bern High School Naval Junior ROTC Sailing: Advanced Drill: sailing to windward... "The Pipeline"
http://nbnjrotc-sail.blogspot.com/2010/10/advanced-drill-sailing-to-windward.html
New Bern High School Naval Junior ROTC Sailing. Monday, October 4, 2010. Advanced Drill: sailing to windward. "The Pipeline". We have several drills which work on the skills of sailing to windward. . one is "The Cone" (link). And here is another to work on these specific skills. First, what are the skills of sailing to windward? One is recognizing when the boat is CLOSE-HAULED. This is when the sails are pulled in tight, the boats is sailing at a an angle close the wind direction. Sounds easy! Is also sa...

New Bern High School Naval Junior ROTC Sailing: Sailing Drills...
http://nbnjrotc-sail.blogspot.com/2010/08/sailing-drill-clock-pick-one-get-there.html
New Bern High School Naval Junior ROTC Sailing. Monday, August 16, 2010. Why have sailing drills? When we sail a boat, we need to do at least 11 or more things simultaneously. So, a beginning sailor (especially the skipper) typically gets yelled at "Pull the fumbledygumble" or "Straighten your mapperfrapper" and a constant stream of similar nonsense. For now, just for the drill, ignore the mapperfrapper and fumbledygumble. We'll work on those things later! The basic of basics. This is not difficult but t...

New Bern High School Naval Junior ROTC Sailing: April 2015
http://nbnjrotc-sail.blogspot.com/2015_04_01_archive.html
New Bern High School Naval Junior ROTC Sailing. Tuesday, April 21, 2015. Many sailing classes do not get the experience of sailing in strong wind. This semester, we are getting LOTS of practice in reefing the mainsails, handling the boat in big waves, and the fun of going fast. In this photo, both skippers are Advanced Sailing cadets. passed basic sailing earlier in their careers! Beginners, step up! You do not earn a medal for being crew! A good afternoon on the water! Coach Murphy did great at helping ...

New Bern High School Naval Junior ROTC Sailing: Basic Maneuvers & Evolutions 1... TACKING
http://nbnjrotc-sail.blogspot.com/2012/11/basic-maneuvers-evolutions-1-tacking.html
New Bern High School Naval Junior ROTC Sailing. Tuesday, November 6, 2012. Basic Maneuvers and Evolutions 1. TACKING. When we go sailing, we have to DO a bunch of stuff. In order to get things done, we need to KNOW how to do them, which entails knowing the words for the things we do and things we do them with. The very first time you sail, unless you sail all the way across the river and stop at the shore over there, you will have to turn around. This boat is turning but it is NOT "tacking.". The first s...

New Bern High School Naval Junior ROTC Sailing: Basic Lesson... Parts of the Boat , chapter 1
http://nbnjrotc-sail.blogspot.com/2011/02/basic-lesson-parts-of-boat-chapter-1.html
New Bern High School Naval Junior ROTC Sailing. Saturday, February 12, 2011. Basic Lesson. Parts of the Boat , chapter 1. Learning to sail requires learning a new language. It is romantic to consider 'the language of the sea' but it is practical to realize that -all- specialized fields such as medicine or engineering also have their terminology. A person could not get far as a doctor if they said "those air-thingies" instead of "lungs" (or better yet, referred to pulmonology. Some people think of it as t...
