The blog of author and journalist Colin Woodard. Thursday, April 2, 2015. GE is Yankee, Coca-Cola Deep Southern: do regional cultures shape corporate ones? I enjoy seeing the many applications of the framework set forth in my fourth book, American Nations: A History of the Eleven Rival Regional Cultures of North America. From college football conferences. To the governance of the United Methodist Church. Practitioners have availed themselves of the model to better understand the world they operate in.

http://colinwoodard.blogspot.com/2015/04/what-is-midwest.html

The blog of author and journalist Colin Woodard. Monday, April 27, 2015. What is the Midwest? There's a movement afoot among Midwestern historians to revive the region's identity. Spearheaded by South Dakota's Jon Lauck, author of The Lost Region. It aims to spark an intellectual conversation about the region's identity, history, and culture. Here's Lauck, who is also counsel to Sen. John Thune, talking with the Argus-Leader. They've started a new regional history association. Suggested that if there is ...

World Wide Woodard: In the Czech Republic

http://colinwoodard.blogspot.com/2015/05/in-czech-republic.html

The blog of author and journalist Colin Woodard. Tuesday, May 19, 2015. In the Czech Republic. I've spent the past few days in the Czech Republic, including Prague, which I first visited during the Velvet Revolution in 1989. It's hard for any visit to measure up to that particular one, given the emotional poignancy of those glorious days when hope and change weren't empty slogans. And, alas, the old city has continued its inevitable transformation into EuroDisney East, complete with Segways. Recorde de m...

Posted a powerful article by Deborah Copaken Kogen. My So-Called 'Post-Feminist' Life in Arts and Letters". That sketched out the immense vicissitudes of her publishing career as a woman. At the end of her article, Kogen cites a single line of a letter written in 1837 by Robert Southey. And, um, the Luddites. So I couldn't resist the u...

How the SSM Debate Made Me a Libertarian. April 29, 2015. After listening to yesterday’s oral arguments before the Supreme Court regarding same-sex marriage (SSM), I am now an unabashed political libertarian. It’s a political philosophy that I’ve been leaning towards for years, but the SSM debate has now sealed the deal for me. If you wish&#4...

Sometimes about Portland, Maine or not! Sunday, January 31, 2010. Saturday Night at the Ice Bar. Stopped by late for a quick peek at the Ice bar on Saturday night. Sometimes about Portland, Maine or not! Monday, June 28, 2010. Taste of the Nation 2010. Taste of the Nation 2010 was a huge success again this year at it's new location, Portland's Ocean Gateway. The event which raises money each year to fight children's hunger was held inside a large pavilion put up by Leavitt and Parris in the nearby parking area. I've took way to many pictures to post them all here, so I will put the larger group on Flickr. Taste of the Nation 2010. Friday, June 25, 2010. Roasted Hal...

Sometimes about Portland, Maine or not! Sunday, March 6, 2011. Well I survived the Incredible Breakfast Cook-Off in the sense that I'm not lying on my stomach with a heating pad on my back, but I was in no shape to pick up a camera today.
