A Mourner’s Pain | SRQ Jew

Quotations – Updated! A Mourner’s Pain. Posted by SRQ Jew. Asymp; Leave a comment. Loss of a parent. Shabbat — February 18, 2012. I’m in mourning. My father died five months ago. My grandfather died 40 years ago on this date. I rise for the Mourner’s Kaddish with others who have experienced loss. I say the prayer the way my grandfather did, with soft S sounds instead of hard T’s. I weep silently. How can I possible segue to a joyous song in those few seconds? Why so soon after the Mourner’s Kaddish?

Quotations – Updated! Power of Positive Perception. Posted by SRQ Jew. Asymp; 4 Comments. I recently wrote about post traumatic growth, the unexpected but positive outcome that can result from traumatic experiences. The researcher said, “there’s a clear relationship between thinking you’ll do well and actually doing well.” Kind of like the Little Engine That Could saying “I think I can, I think I can.”. It only applies to duffers. Professional golfers still have to train. Please don’t start writing...

Waiting | SRQ Jew
https://srqjew.wordpress.com/2012/04/04/waiting
Quotations – Updated! Posted by SRQ Jew. Asymp; 1 Comment. The play “Waiting for Godot” is an absurdist exercise in futility – Didi and Gogo wait and wait, but Godot never comes. It is even more poignant because we, the audience, know that Godot isn’t coming, not in this lifetime or the next. The difference between knowing the outcome and not knowing is enormous. We feel that way all the time – will my daughter pass her driving test, do well on the SATs, get into a good college? There’s been a lot ...

Quotations – Updated! On Dying (and Living) and Mourning. Posted by SRQ Jew. Asymp; 5 Comments. Let’s start with something uplifting from a friend’s Facebook page:. If you are sad today, lift your heart with the words of R. Nathan ben Naphtali Herz: “The whole world is nothing more than a singing and dancing before God. Everyone is a singer and every letter of the Torah a musical note.”. Somewhere in the middle was a woman who died at the age of 57. I didn’t know her. I got an urgent call o...I think the...

Quotations – Updated! Quotations – Updated! Note from Jennifer: I’m a sucker for a good quote. New ones are added at the top of the page, so you don’t have to hunt for them. If you think that I misquoted someone, or you have another that you’d like me to add, just let me know. I put a dollar in a change machine. Nothing changed. It’s not cool to be Jewish, or Negro, or Italian. It’s just cool to be alive, to be around. The one who removes a mountain begins by carrying away small stones. Aka the Dalai Lama.
