Hazel coppice growing an. Abundant crop of poles. Coppicing is a traditional, sustainable and productive form of woodland management. A coppiced wood is cut on a cycle, which can be anything from 5 to 30 years, depending on the size of the poles required. MaHS - Moss and Height Spring Wood. An interesting happening in woodland management took place earlier in the year. The Woodland Trust leased the management of a twenty-hectare ancient woodland in the south of the Lake District to the Bill Hogarth MBE Memorial Apprenticeship Trust. My products are made using Oak coppiced locally in South Cumbria, where I grew up. Oak is stronger than many materials. There is only so far that wood can be influenced, so you have to work with the material and it plays a part in deciding what I make. Oak coppice is cut on a 20-30 year rotation when the stems are 4-6 inches in diameter. These stems are cleft into quarters, boiled in a tank overnight and split down further with a series of knives. Spent the morning volunteering as an information stroller at the Festival of the Tree at Westonbirt Arboretum. Really enjoyed wandering around the site, helping people where I could, and chatting to various stall holders. The chainsaw carving was amazing. The weather kept dry, which was a real bonus. The site would have quickly turned into a quagmire had it rained. Alder is identified by the obvious lenticels of the bark, plus its leaf shape.
