Movies Couch: February 2012

Sunday, February 26, 2012. Extremely LOUD and Incredibly CLOSE. 8220;It started with a simple problem – a key that needs to fit a lock,” related 9-year-old Oskar. For Oskar, this ‘key’ mission turned despair into determination: “. Nothing is going to stop me, not even me! 8221; Finally, he felt in control. Progressively, it became clear that the expedition was important not because of what he would find in the end, but what he would become along the way. I planned six months but it was never six months.

Movies Couch: March 2012
http://moviescouch.blogspot.com/2012_03_01_archive.html
Wednesday, March 14, 2012. This Iranian movie takes you right into. The resulting cliff-hanger is forgiveable. Powerful and convincing portrayals of ordinary folks with deep issues common to man. Good English subtitles lead you through the plots and sub-plots without skipping a beat. This intense drama is not recommended for those who just want to sit back and unwind. I was pretty wound up after.even the Starbucks latte in hand didn't help. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). View my complete profile.

Movies Couch: December 2013

Sunday, December 29, 2013. The Secret Life of Walter Mitty. DAY-DREAMERS, space-cadets, dim-witted are terms used variously to describe those who routinely and effortlessly drift into fantasy realm - even in the midst of company and conversation. To these drifters, the physical and the illusory worlds co-exist. Calling someone a day dreamer summons an image of one who is lazy and ineffectual but I would argue that conjuring fantasies is actually a complex mental process not for those accustomed to. My ea...

Movies Couch: April 2012

Wednesday, April 4, 2012. A SIMPLE LIFE is Hong Kong movie. Starring Deannie Yip Tak Han – I love her enigmatic stare – and Andy Lau that was released around 9th March. For many reasons, the month-long delay to catch it today was well-timed not least because I had two Cantonese-speaking companions who recognised the stream of veteran and senescent actors appearing in starring or cameo roles throughout the movie! And Ah Tao, in Mandarin of course. Deannie Yip’s role. Ah Tao’s influence on Roger is u...

Movies Couch: June 2011

Thursday, June 30, 2011. This is the story about a man and his struggle with depression. It is also about his family’s struggle with the effects of the illness which alienates him from work, from his wife and children, from himself and just about everything else in life. In the midst of the hullabaloo, they take a family portrait … picture perfect. 8221;, while those with unhealthy coping behaviours to struggles common to man, find identification with groups that declare “. We are born this way. I care l...

Readers' Couch: HUNGRY FOR PARIS & HUMBLE PIE
http://readerscouch.blogspot.com/2013/01/hungry-for-paris-humble-pie.html
HUNGRY FOR PARIS and HUMBLE PIE. HUMBLE PIE by Gordon Ramsay. HUNGRY FOR PARIS by Alexander Lobrano. For the most part, restaurant reviews are as interesting to me as traffic reports in that I do not expect the reporter to reveal if he had a fight with his wife on a morning he faced bad traffic. Contrast this with good food writing that exudes soul, and offers as much insight on food as it does the diner and the dining experience. For this reason, HUNGRY FOR PARIS. Indeed, bigotry will soon spoil anythin...

Movies Couch: July 2012
http://moviescouch.blogspot.com/2012_07_01_archive.html
Tuesday, July 31, 2012. If I wanted a deeply moving story, I’d choose a foreign language film. Somehow, the English language has severe constraints to translate human emotions, and that which is obscure, elusive and intangible into words. The lady at the video shop was raving about this French movie that ‘ you must watch. but not suitable for children. 8216; Is there nudity. 8216; No, but it’s not suitable for children. 8217; she warned kindly. INCENDIES is a French word for fire. Nawal was raped repeate...

Friday, April 22, 2011. This is a 2011 take on the original version made 30 years ago. Russell Brand and (. Greta Gerwig reprised the roles played by the late Dudley Moore (. Passed away in 2002. Brand's delivery of Arthur's antics makes you laugh, and his tender moments move you to tears -. Like when Hobson fell sick and he instinctively switched role to be her caregiver. They have an on-screen adult-child bond that is palpable beyond performance. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). View my complete profile.
