A Craftsteader's Journal

Crafting a handmade life. Sunday, July 12, 2015. 410 yards of bright green Border Leicester was my first spin of the Tour. Tour de Fleece is the mad dash of the spinning world- a three week frenzy of spinning wool into yarn preceded by a long build up period where people join virtual teams and set goals. Goal setting is basically showing pictures of all the fiber you plan to spin. Set to the Tour de France, spinners from around the world started turning their wheels last Saturday, July 3. Sitting back in...

A Craftsteader's Journal: A slight obsession with socks

http://craftsteader.blogspot.com/2015/03/a-slight-obsession-with-socks.html

Crafting a handmade life. Sunday, March 8, 2015. A slight obsession with socks. Socks for DH. I couldn't get them off to take a decent picture. Pretty and sparkly colors! What I love about the yarn available for socks is how pretty it is! Here is some Plymouth yarn that is just full of interesting and fun to knit colors. Plus it is sparkly! March 17, 2015 at 3:42 PM. A Craftsteader's Journal: Weight no-loss blues

http://craftsteader.blogspot.com/2015/07/rose-gives-herself-swift-kick.html

Crafting a handmade life. Sunday, July 5, 2015. Six months into my diet when I should be making my friends jealous with how much weight I've lost and all the new clothes I have, I am right back where I started. I reversed direction about the time this photo was taken of me dyeing silk in my garage. Below is a picture of me- I am practically square! I had planned to crop this photo to hide my extended butt, but instead I am going for truth. Anyone who knows me knows I'm shaped like a rounded square. So I ...

A Craftsteader's Journal: Carding

http://craftsteader.blogspot.com/p/carding.html

Crafting a handmade life. Color blending for a heather yarn. I used .4 ounces each of raspberry and elderberry dyed Cormo for each batt. I alternated running small teased bits of colored fiber on the first run through the carder. I did a second pass by pulling thin strips off the first-run batt and sending them through again. The batt to the left went through two times and the one on the right three. You can see the one on the right is more blended. So that is a short course on creating a heathered yarn!

A Craftsteader's Journal: Bad ply day

http://craftsteader.blogspot.com/2010/01/bad-ply-day.html

Crafting a handmade life. Sunday, January 31, 2010. Plied yarn should be a thing of beauty. The yarn should be like a string of pearls, lustrous, round and intriguing to knit. It doesn’t turn out like this all the time. Like styling hair, there are days the ply turns out limp, uneven and uninteresting: a bad ply day. Just such a yarn is shown below. Can this yarn be saved? Thank you for visiting my blog. Please stop by again. March 17, 2010 at 4:19 AM. How very interesting. And reassuring :). Slow food, ...

A Craftsteader's Journal: Suburban gal

http://craftsteader.blogspot.com/2011/03/suburban-gal.html

Crafting a handmade life. Sunday, March 13, 2011. Broccoli getting a head start. Tina Fey, in an autobiographical article in the March 14 New Yorker, described herself as an "obedient white girl from the suburbs." The label struck a chord. Here I am nestled in my upscale suburb doing all the right things (I am cooking for my elderly relative as I write this) and my idea of boldly stepping out is planting some ruby chard in my front yard amongst the roses. March 13, 2011 at 5:14 PM. Hi Lioness: Yep, Im st...

Wednesday, June 30, 2010. Please find my blog at http:/ www.craftsteader.blogspot.com/. Posted by Weaving Rose. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Please find my blog at http:/ www.craftsteader.blo. Slow food, slow cloth: the best in life comes when we discover the making of a thing is more valuable than the thing itself. Crafting is not about “patience” but finding beauty in the process. I am a nature-loving, progressive artisan experimenting with sustainable living in the Chicago suburbs.
