A Damned Conjuror Starts Lecturing. Read on to be Dazzled and Confounded, Shocked and Astounded! Library Loot (The Online Edition). March 5, 2012. Reserving library books online. I didn’t get any new books from the library as I still have most of the books from last time to read. I did, however, reserve a couple from the online library portal. By Kazuo Ishiguro – I wrote a post on this book. I just thought it sounded interesting and got it on a whim. Hope it’s good! From → Library Loot. Leave one →.

Olduvai Reads: Read: The Collector of Hearts by Joyce Carol Oates
http://olduvai.blogspot.com/2009/09/read-collector-of-hearts-by-joyce-carol.html
Thursday, September 17, 2009. Read: The Collector of Hearts by Joyce Carol Oates. The beauty of this collection of 27 short stories is in the everyday. And how terrifying the everyday can be. Oates, like Shirley Jackson (whose Haunting of Hill House was my previous RIP IV Challenge read. Of course, with 27 stories, some read and forgetton. But the ones that did stick in my mind included The Sky Blue Ball. You can sorta guess what it's about from the title though. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Power...
Olduvai Reads: Moving!
http://olduvai.blogspot.com/2009/11/moving.html
Thursday, November 12, 2009. This blog has served me well over the past few years. It has developed from a rather personal blog into a Singapore food one, and, since this year and my leave of absence from Singapore, it's been turned into a sort of book blog. It was quite appalling going over some of my earlier blog posts which were extremely ramble-y and whiny (oh please don't go look! This comment has been removed by a blog administrator. Red Sorghum: A Novel of China. A legend in China, where it won the major literary awards and inspired an Oscar-nominated film, this is a novel of family, myth, and memory, set during the fratricidal barbarity of the 1930s, when the Chinese battled both Japanese invaders and each other. The Ghost in Love. A man f...
Olduvai Reads: Read: Affinity by Sarah Waters
http://olduvai.blogspot.com/2009/08/read-affinity-by-sarah-waters.html
Monday, August 31, 2009. Read: Affinity by Sarah Waters. One reviewer said of Sarah Waters: "this is such a brilliant writer that her readers would believe anything she told them". And oh, how true, how true. This remark rings so true with Affinity. Waters swept me up in this story largely set in Millbank Prison, where Margaret Prior plays Lady Visitor to the inmates. She is enraptured by the beautiful and mysterious Selina Dawes, who turns out to be a medium. Although I didn't put this in my pool. Read:...
Olduvai Reads: October 2009
http://olduvai.blogspot.com/2009_10_01_archive.html
Saturday, October 31, 2009. Read in October 2009. I can't believe that we're heading into the last two months of the year already. Has it been ten months since I've been here? Where did all that time go? Oh right, I was doing some reading (of course, not reading like some other people have been reading. I've only just hit 200 books). Anyway, on this last day of October, I have no reading plans, as it's the husband's birthday and it's off to make a pandan cake! Happy birthday my love! The Children of Men.
Olduvai Reads: Read: Neverwhere by Neil Gaiman
http://olduvai.blogspot.com/2009/09/read-neverwhere-by-neil-gaiman.html
Monday, September 28, 2009. Read: Neverwhere by Neil Gaiman. There's London Above - that's where you lived - and then there's London Below - the Underside - inhabited by the people who fell through the cracks in the world. Now you're one of them.". Oh, Neil Gaiman has been quite quite clever with Neverwhere. Which has such poetic writing but some sentences require thorough rereading. And right now, I'm not sure if that's the kind of meal that will satisfy me. But Neverwhere. Powered by Goodreads.com.

Wednesday, November 04, 2009. Library Loot (4 November 2009). Library Loot is a weekly event co-hosted by. That encourages bloggers to share the books they’ve checked out from the library. I'm still making my way through the 1000 page collection of J.G. Ballard's stories, so this library loot is a little light, with half of it being graphic novels. And, oh no! The main library's going to be closed for renovations at the end of the month - expected completion of the renovation is April 2010! With warmth a...
Olduvai Reads: Reading on Sunday
http://olduvai.blogspot.com/2009/11/reading-on-sunday.html
Monday, November 09, 2009. On Sunday morning, I woke to an email from my library reminding me that quite a few books were due back within the next few days. Argh and aack! I had yet to start on two of them, and the third, the 1000 J.G. Ballard collection. Had some 400 pages left to go! With such impending doom looming above my head, I settled down to a day of reading (the husband was busy with work). I began with Kazuo Ishiguro's A Pale View of Hills. That was followed by In Other Rooms, Other Wonders.
