September 15, 2014. Bull; 0 Comments. A few things I’ve learned about user interface design working on a flight project at NASA: Assume your operator is looking at your Graphical User Interface (GUI) at 3am after having been awake since 6am the previous day. Space, Design, Travel. Education & outreach. Build a Candy Satellite. MDRS Crew 147: Team ISU. March 18, 2015. Sometimes in outreach, engineers can feel like there’s a barrier to entry. They might be nervous about what kids might ask or whether they’ll look silly. So, for your information and enjoyment, here are some of my favorite questions I’ve ever been asked and answers that I may or may not have pieced together, but in retrospect would have been the best. Do you believe in aliens? What do you do?

Space, Design, Travel. Education & outreach. Build a Candy Satellite. MDRS Crew 147: Team ISU. July 27, 2015. Art has played a huge role in how we think about space. Space heroes of the past dabbled as artists and created fantastic visions that we have spent the past few decades making into reality. These images from the 1970s. May look familiar if you’ve seen Elysium. All images courtesy of NASA Ames. This entry was posted in art. Follow me on Twitter. View danielledelatte’s profile on Facebook.

November 28, 2014. Bull; 0 Comments. Space is a dangerous business. We have unfortunately been reminded of this recently with the death of SpaceShipTwo test pilot Michael Alsbury. It is an extremely hostile environment to the human body, and a lot of planning and technology is required to keep humans alive in space. One day, we will send humans to Mars, and their safety will be… Read more →. November 7, 2014. Bull; 0 Comments. The Things We Leave Behind. How did I get here? How did I get here?

Mars 500 and Mars Desert Research Station. January 18, 2015. Bull; 0 Comments. A few years ago, I was selected by the European Space Agency to simulate a trip to Mars: the Mars 500 mission. For 520 days, I lived in 3 sealed modules with 5 other crewmembers. Today I’m in the MDRS with our Team ISU and it feels natural to compare those 2 experiences. First, let’s compare the 2 crews. We… Read more →. The Things We Leave Behind. How did I get here? How did I get here? On Journalist Report 13.

How did I get here? January 13, 2015. Bull; 2 Comments. How exactly do you pack for Mars? Those were the words bouncing around in my head the two days before the BIG adventure. All I knew was that it was winter and I was coming from 80 F weather. What do you do in that case? No, layers, layers, and layers. The real test will be tomorrow as the first… Read more →. January 23, 2015. Bull; 0 Comments. Upon returning to the hab, crew engineer Rebeca Rodriguez and Commander Romain Charles did some vital engineering work to the hab’s water pump. These repairs have increased our water pressure, and given us hot water for the first time since we arrived. We are leaving the hab in great shape for the incoming Crew 148! We will have one more EVA on the ATVs tomorrow, followed by a walking EVA for our final EVA on Friday. This second week has gone so quickly!

January 23, 2015. Bull; 0 Comments. ATVs are so much fun! The crew who stayed back in the hab had another workout in our downstairs gym/science deck. As we don’t have any exercise equipment here our workouts consist mostly of bodyweight exercises and stationary running and jumping. We have also started planning for the arrival of the next crew. Hard to believe that they arrive in four days time! This means our rotation is nearly done! Tomorrow is a GPS calibration exercise for the wrist mounted EVA assis...

Day 9 Thoughts – MDRS Crew 147

January 19, 2015. Bull; 1 Comment. Today is Sunday; no waking up at 7am, no EVA preparations, and no rush breakfast. All of us had a nice and long sleep after this extraordinary week. After Breakfast we decided to do some work-out, since we have water and we can take shower. I am here at MDRS since one week and I can tell it feels here like home, and I was wondering why is it like that? Or is it the amazing landscape outside the Sim and my passion for space? I think it is a mix of all these feelings.

Journalist Report, Day 5. January 14, 2015. Bull; 4 Comments. The second EVA of our crew rotation took place today, which saw a three person crew of Danielle DeLatte, Andrew Henry, and Scott MacPhee take the ATVs out to a site some 5kms from the hab. The EVA started with the usual donning of space suits, and airlock cycling. Once outside on the surface of Mars, the crew undertook some… Read more →. Journalist Report, Day 4. January 13, 2015. January 23, 2015. Bull; 1 Comment. Actually, Alt-J have been on high rotation on Hab FM. The radios have been a lot of fun. They have a voice activated mode which we have been using, but it often cuts out the first word. We have mitigated this by starting each transmission with a trigger word, usually TRANSMIT!
