Down by the River

Friday, 5 June 2015. Resurrection – March Browns, River Usk. At the risk of repeating myself, it’s been a while since my last entry. Short on time, I've been forced to make the choice between fishing, tying flies and blogging - my fly boxes are also sparsely populated at the moment. Early riser: LDO feeder. Large Dark Olives (LDOs) have been less prolific in the last few years, but the March Brown (MB) hatch has steadily improved. Most sustained LDO feeders were witnessed on drizzly, windless afterno...

Down by the River: August 2014

http://www.downbytheriverflyfishing.blogspot.com/2014_08_01_archive.html

Friday, 1 August 2014. End of the Day - River Usk, Summer 2014. Despite maintaining good levels for the first half of the season, the Usk catchment has not received significant rainfall since late May and the bones of the river are on display. Hot dry spells dictate that I fish mainly in the relative cool of the late evening, or early morning. A busy work life, a dislike of most TV programmes and close proximity to the river results in many summer evenings spent fishing. Kris Kent - big man, small trout.

Wednesday, 9 July 2014. Higher Ground - Llyn Gamallt and Llyn Gwyddior, May 2014. I left my meeting near Blaenau Ffestiniog. And drove into the slate mining town ('that roofed the world') to pick up Aled who had been to purchase tickets. For the next day at Llyn Gamallt. 65279;. True to form, by early evening, we were on the edge of the Snowdonia National Park. Relaxing with a pint in The Grapes at Maentwrog. Llyn Gamallt, 30th May. Tuesday, 28 May 2013. The Monnow Social - May 2013. It has been a long held ambition to fish at the. Monnow Rivers Association Auction and Social. And, thanks to a few mates, I managed to do so this year. 'The Social' is a celebration of the River Monnow and a great way to generate income to support the commendable river management activities of the organisers. I had little charge in my iPhone and forgot my camera and so please excuse the absence of photographs in this entry. Probably just as well. I fis...

Finally Fishing: November 2012

http://finallyfishing.blogspot.com/2012_11_01_archive.html

Thursday, 15 November 2012. It's Not All About Catching Fish You Know! As a fisherman, one of the most infuriating questions I'm asked is:. What's the point in fishing if you don't catch any fish? What follows is a cartoon style cut scene where I remove said offenders tongue and use it as dead bait before snapping back to reality and have to handle the matter in an adult way. It usually involves me getting up and making a cup of tea! This past Saturday was a prime example. As was the case this past week.

The Riverman Diaries: March 2014

I would love to live like a river flows, carried by the surprise of its own unfolding.” John O'Donohue. Friday, 28 March 2014. Alchemy On The River Dore. After the experience of last week, a fruitless trip to the River Honddu, Tuesday's destination required a little more thought and consideration. The waters of the spring fed Honddu were bitterly cold and the river in parsimonious mood. A couple more weeks are probably needed before the place wakes up. But what to do in the meantime? The Riverman Diaries: Preparation

http://therivermandiaries.blogspot.com/2014/03/preparation.html

I would love to live like a river flows, carried by the surprise of its own unfolding.” John O'Donohue. Wednesday, 5 March 2014. Do you dream about wild trout fishing? I do, particularly over the wilder winter months. With a new season ahead, anticipation and preparation build gradually. Snap shots of memorable fish have been gazed at lovingly, questions form in the mind… “Will they still be on station this year? And just how big will they be? The trout season starts early here, on March 3. Flies have be...

The Riverman Diaries: March Blue

http://therivermandiaries.blogspot.com/2014/03/march-blue.html

I would love to live like a river flows, carried by the surprise of its own unfolding.” John O'Donohue. Wednesday, 12 March 2014. What to expect on the first day of a new season on the river is a fly fisher’s conundrum. There is though one element that retains certainty, the river itself. A rough cascade, tumbling through a tight upland valley, its waters foaming and burbling though narrow straights and glassy slicks, with only the occasional pool affording it chance to catch its breath. The trouble with...

Finally Fishing: February 2013

http://finallyfishing.blogspot.com/2013_02_01_archive.html

Thursday, 28 February 2013. Lack of fishing = More time tying flies. Firstly I must apologise for lack of posting recently. However. until the previous weekend where i managed to get on the river (new post to follow) I haven't been able to fish much of late. With family commitments, the weather being as it was (rain, snow, more rain), I have been turning my attentions to fly tying. Ever since I got back into my fishing, my goal was to tie my own flies. Naturally, with the materials I had, my first attemp...

Friday, 4 January 2013. Guideline Kispiox Jacket Review. Hope everyone has had a very merry Christmas and you've all been spoilt rotten by you loved ones.oh sorry by Santa! Anyway, Santa was kind enough to bring me a Guideline Kispiox Jacket because I have been a very good boy - however, if I'd have eaten much more Turkey he may have had to come back with a bigger size. Overall I would recommend the jacket and its well worth the price tag of £150. Links to this post. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). For the m...

Wednesday, 31 July 2013. All the Gear. Some Idea. It’s funny, whenever I buy new fishing gear I'm always quite nervous when I first use it. Whether is because the majority of kit we buy is expensive and I don’t want it to be a waste of money! Anyway, I recently got hold of a new Airflo Super-Dri line. I had to wait longer than I hoped due but now I have it and it’s loaded onto my reel. However for anyone who wants to know here (in blue.
