Subversive yet strangely satisfying commentary on the genre (by Ellie Brewster)
Greetings, cyberstudents! | FSF: The Class

Subversive yet strangely satisfying commentary on the genre. Your blogs look wonderful! You have shamed me into doing something a little more creative with my own. I’ve re-read Kate Wilhelm’s “No Light in the Window” (1963), and I’ve been thinking about sexual dimorphism. Quite a bit as I read your commentaries on it. Many of you are writing about the social effects of biological difference. There’s a great post on difference. For He is the Kwisatz Haderach. To be emotional, or is it in their genes?
Hierarchy and profit | FSF: The Class

Subversive yet strangely satisfying commentary on the genre. We continue to discover oppressive systems in the works we are studying this term — patriarchal, medical, military, governmental. Sorenik. Has a great cartoon about this. Many people in this blog ring are beginning to ask questions about why we have these systems. Some people seem to think they are just human nature, perhaps embedded in our biology. Others see it as a product of our civilization. We will confront this question.
Rachel in Love | FSF: The Class

Subversive yet strangely satisfying commentary on the genre. Blog makes an interesting point, arguing that as a chimp/human, Rachel has no future. She can’t hold a job, she has no education, and her “marriage” is definitely inappropriate. I wonder how this argument works in the context of this story about Moscow’s stray dogs. Who eke out a living in that extraordinarily cold city by adapting to human society and technology, and by using their keen understanding of human nature. We could argue that these ...

Subversive yet strangely satisfying commentary on the genre. Life in the chinks. In the accompanying essay in our text, L. Timmel Duchamp sees that “What I Didn’t See” carries on a dialogue with the famous story by James Tiptree, “The Women Men Don’t See.” As far as I’m concerned, that is the very best of Tiptree’s short stories, and you can read it here. Many of the blogs I saw today were concerned about the human/nature relationship in “What I Didn’t See.” Avatard. By possibly becoming a part of the my...

What Makes an Alien Alien? To Be, Or Not to Be…a Human. On: February 27, 2010. As technology advances every day in our modern society, the distinction between humans and machines blurs. February 8, 2010 at 1:39 pm. I don’t think that phrase alone is racist. I think its more the fact that she was able to see a gorilla as somewhat human at the same time that she is nearly unable to view Africans as human, despite the fact that the former is an animal and the latter actually is a human.

To Be, Or Not to Be…a Human. What Makes an Alien Alien? On: February 20, 2010. Butler’s exact reasons for portraying the Oankali this way are not quite as clear. Is she trying to make a point that we humans really are not almighty and superior as we act? Is she saying that there is some superior power that actually rules humans and our acceptance is the only way to save the Earth? Leave a Reply Cancel reply. Enter your comment here. Science fiction authors have the perfect genre to toy with this fuzzy boundary. In. Jeanette Winterson uses her genre perfectly to bring to the forefront of her story the issue of what we define as a human by bringing us Orbus, a future society in which everything is technologically perfect, including people, a society shared with Robo. Aliens ate my patriarchy! Feminist science fiction through the eyes of a sympathetic earthman. A One Way Street – Russ’s The Female Man (1975). When I was first exposed to Joanna Russ’s. As I’ve developed this idea I came repeatedly to one thought: if Russ is actually endorsing this idea of progress (which is a valid objection), then there is nothing a sympathetic man can do but resign himself to his own obsolescence. Is that actually equality? Joanna Russ (Beacon, 1986) – Original printing 1975. You are...
