Foothills Fancies: Hawk Week
http://foothillsfancies.blogspot.com/2010/01/hawk-week.html
Small Wonders and Natural Moments. Life and Nature in the Colorado Front Range. Saturday, January 09, 2010. Beginning with Monday's Redtail-magpie episode. The week has focused on hawks. Wednesday morning, another magpie fit drew me out to look at the same elm, and I was rewarded with a view of a Cooper's Hawk hopping from the ground to a low branch of the magpie tree with what I hope was a starling in hand. First four around 8:45 in early light; last four around 9:15 am. A bird sci name that makes sense!

The Witches' Garden edition, to be hosted at Cardiff Cocktails. As with so many adventures, this one started quite by accident. I was browsing happily, and something caught my eye on someone's website—it might have been the Phytophactor. 8217;s—off we go then! The link led me to the Drunken Botanist. We took Amy at h...
Foothills Fancies: Something with leaves
http://foothillsfancies.blogspot.com/2013/03/something-with-leaves.html
Small Wonders and Natural Moments. Life and Nature in the Colorado Front Range. Monday, March 25, 2013. We drove out yesterday to look at pretty snow and rocks, and I had an encounter with a plant that was at least green! An accomplishment at this time of this particular spring.) Other than our ubiquitous conifers, predominantly Ponderosa Pine and Rocky Mountain Juniper, the aspect out there is bleak and brown for plant life, and white for everything else. In deer feeding studies back in the 1940s and 50...

Small Wonders and Natural Moments. Life and Nature in the Colorado Front Range. Wednesday, March 25, 2015. Relocating after Nine Years Here. Something new in the fancy foothills world—now we have our own domain. (I probably shouldn't say "we," but I keep hoping some of my naturalist friends will contribute, as they are better naturalists and photographers than I am! As of January, FF has a new home at FoothillsFancies.org. 12/30/14, reports the recent return of our very rare visitors. No guarantees I'll ...

Small Wonders: Spring Sap Rising
http://natureessays.blogspot.com/2006/06/spring-sap-rising.html
Nature Essays for Foothills Fancies. Saturday, June 03, 2006. Is our weather getting trickier every year, or are we only imagining it? It's hard to take the long view and evaluate whether this is global warming we're seeing, or just a "normal" drought cycle. Okay, things are looking up today (I'm snowed in as I write this), but can a few heavy spring snowstorms make enough of a difference? Labels: living things plant. Keep up the good work. Thanks. Your are Nice. And so is your site! Above: Button mushro...
Small Wonders: Let the Birds Do It!
http://natureessays.blogspot.com/2010/02/let-birds-do-it.html
Nature Essays for Foothills Fancies. Thursday, February 25, 2010. Let the Birds Do It! Each spring for a few weeks I get the urge. I study seed catalogs and linger longingly at nursery displays. Sometimes I even succumb to the lure of bright flowers and elegant shrubs. But despite my fantasies, I have yet to achieve the perfection and visual charm I so often see portrayed as The Ideal Garden. One year I noticed a clump of chokecherries (. Prunus virginiana, Padus virginiana. And two wax currants (. There...

Small Wonders: A Light in the Forest: Aspens and Fire
http://natureessays.blogspot.com/2010/06/light-in-forest-aspens-and-fire.html
Nature Essays for Foothills Fancies. Tuesday, June 01, 2010. A Light in the Forest: Aspens and Fire. Today, aspen forests are as often rejuvenated by logging as by fire. Any method that removes the overstory trees without damaging the all-important root system is effective. In fact, researchers have found root density to be a key indicator of successful regeneration in aspen stands. Too few roots, and the aspens give way to grasses or conifers. Labels: living things plant. Is a spot to stash longer natur...
