http://shenyanigans.blogspot.com/2012/06/back-to-back-shanghai-weekends.html
喀布尔,阿富汗 Kabul, Afghanistan. Wednesday, June 13, 2012. These pictures are a conglomeration of two recent trips to Shanghai, taken just a couple weeks apart (you can never have too much Shanghai in your life! The trick to making a soupy meat dumpling is to make the broth ahead of time, refrigerate it until it turns into gelatin, and then insert the gelatin and meat into the dumpling. When you steam or fry the dumpling, the gelatin transforms back into a liquid and bursts into soupy deliciousness in you...

Shenyanigans: February 2011
http://shenyanigans.blogspot.com/2011_02_01_archive.html
喀布尔,阿富汗 Kabul, Afghanistan. Friday, February 25, 2011. Today is a BIG day for me in Kabul because I just bought my first carpet! It's about 3'x5' and made of a silk-wool blend. The silk was dyed with saffron for the orange coloring. It was $400, which seemed really expensive to me, but I have no idea how much it would cost elsewhere. Regardless, it's my birthday present to myself :). Friday, February 11, 2011. Bird's eye view of Kabul. View from the car, somewhere in downtown Kabul:. I think that's a pic...

Shenyanigans: Shenyang and Beidaihe
http://shenyanigans.blogspot.com/2012/05/shenyang-and-beidaihe.html
喀布尔,阿富汗 Kabul, Afghanistan. Monday, May 28, 2012. First up: Shenyang and Beidaihe. Two weeks ago I took a weekend trip out to Shenyang to see everyone again. On Saturday we met for hotpot dinner at Haidilao. Barry, Liu Jing, Dong Mei, Will, Ms. Chong, Dannielle, Ji Na, and Yan Heng made it out:. Will, testing the broth in his protective sleeves and apron:. Where to go on Sunday morning? Clearly to the South Market, the most exciting place in the city:. Matt and Juli enjoying the beach:. GLAD YOU ARE BLOG...

Shenyanigans: July 2011
http://shenyanigans.blogspot.com/2011_07_01_archive.html
喀布尔,阿富汗 Kabul, Afghanistan. Monday, July 18, 2011. Que Farah, Farah. Today I went on a one-day trip to Farah. It's the biggest province in Afghanistan but literally has a population of fewer than one million people. Flying over it is like flying over the far side of Mars:. The airport has one dirt runway, a water tower, and a gun tower:. Unfortunately, I couldn't take any pictures in the "city," since I was traveling in an MRAP convoy, with a helmet and body armor. Necessary, but very uncomfortable.

Shenyanigans: Chicken Feet and Go-karts
http://shenyanigans.blogspot.com/2012/07/chicken-feet-and-go-karts.html
喀布尔,阿富汗 Kabul, Afghanistan. Wednesday, July 4, 2012. Chicken Feet and Go-karts. It's taken me a long time to post pictures because it's frankly extremely difficult to actually upload pictures onto this blog, due to the slow internet and the need for a VPN, since blogspot is blocked in China. Anyway, I finally was able to upload a few pictures from the past month, to show what I've been up to. These two dishes are from a delicious brunch at Salt, a restaurant in Lido Park:. Getting ready to drive like Bei...

Shenyanigans: August 2011
http://shenyanigans.blogspot.com/2011_08_01_archive.html
喀布尔,阿富汗 Kabul, Afghanistan. Friday, August 26, 2011. Welcome to Faizabad, where the river is clean and the donkeys are strong! Last Sunday I took a 3-day trip to Faizabad, the capital city of Badakhshan province, located in Afghanistan's far northeast. This is the entrance to the PRT (Provincial Reconstruction Team), where the USG is based. We're guests of the German military. The entire town of Faizabad is built around the river, and lots of the activity is centered around it:. View of Faizabad from abo...

Shenyanigans: October 2011
http://shenyanigans.blogspot.com/2011_10_01_archive.html
喀布尔,阿富汗 Kabul, Afghanistan. Saturday, October 29, 2011. This morning I drove to the outskirts of Kabul (in the opposite direction of Darulaman Road, fortunately, as it was the site of a major suicide attack today). The countryside around the city is actually much nicer than the downtown area, as it's still largely pastoral. Many people were living in tents, even as new construction was crowding them in. Friday, October 21, 2011. Wedding Halls and Bare Shoulders. Bare shoulders and decolletage? On all sid...

This is the Pashtoonistan Hotel (that's the actual spelling), which is located at a crowded intersection, close to the Embassy. If anyone wants to visit, I can probably get you a sweet deal. Sunday, April 3, 2011. Shooting through Bulletproof Glass: image 3. Saturday, April 2, 2011. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). This Mo...
