Grazhina's Page - formerly the New England Miniatures Blog. Miniature Landscaping part III. Mulch, soil, flowers and plants. Many people like to use dried, used coffee grounds or dry used tea leaves to simulate soil. Personally I prefer paint and sand. Why don’t I just glue on the sand, then paint it? In short, I think it’s easier and less aggravating than trying to work the paint into every tiny crevice. This way there’s already a base coat of color, so there’s less work later. Every time I go to Michae...

Grazhina's Page - formerly the New England Miniatures Blog. Through a Doll's Eyes. Introducing Doll Frobisher, owner of the Bungalow. She’s a relative of Miss Emma Frobisher. Who has a very lovely cottage of her own. Some of you who are well aquainted with Miss Frobisher may see there is a bit of a family resemblance. Everyone thinks Doll is short for Dolly, but Doll was named Dolley, after former First Lady, Dolley Madison, wife President James Madison. Sometimes the afternoon sun comes through the fron...

The Gnome's Cottage
New England Miniatures Blog. Click on the pictures to enlarge them. Tuesday, October 30, 2007. A can of Danish Christmas cookies illustrated with works by the Dutch artist Rien Portvliet was the inspiration for this project. My family comes from Lithuania, and log homes were a tradition there, as in other northern European lands. My mother was actually born in a log cottage. Vilija (pronounced vil-ee-ya), the happy gnome sits on her front steps. As you can probably tell, she’s an avid gardener. I wanted ...

The Nuthouse
Friday, November 2, 2007. Here you see the home of Miss Ida Nutkin. It's fairly small, but big enough for one. Miss Ida, for I feel I can call her that, having worked with her so closely for the past several months, finds it cozy and more than adequate for her needs. Here we see Miss Nutkin at her door luxuriating in the morning sun. Next you can see how the Nuthouse was created. It took me 22 days to complete this project. 22 working days, that is. In calendar time, it took quite a bit longer. They give...

The Pumpkin House
Friday, June 13, 2008. What to do with a styrofoam pumpkin. I bought some of those fake pumpkins for jack o'lanterns for Holloween and wondered if it would be hard to turn one into a dollhouse. It wasn't as simple as I thought it would be, but I like the way it turned out. You know.after all the trouble I went through to run in that light, I find I don't like it after all and I might remove it. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). New England Miniatures Links page.

The Bungalow
Click on each picture for a larger view. This is a project that was inspired by early 20th century American bungalows. I’ve set it, however, in the present day. Clay bricks were used for the bottom of the posts and the walks. I prefer to peel the bricks off their backing, placing them closely together, not using any “mortar”. I wanted my bricks to be a bit redder in color, so I painted them. I also carved a tree panel for the front door. The knocker was made from a piece of an earring. By the way, the lo...
Window to the Past
Window to the Past. A compilation of articles from 19th and early 20th century periodicals, many of which could be considered relevant to today's world, or revealing forgotten things about the past.or just plain interesting. Dec 1936 issue of Better Homes and Gardens. Better Homes and Gardens cost 10 cents in 1936. This was a pretty slim issue, and I must confess, not all that interesting. I did find a few things that I thought I might pass on. English Plum Cake 1936. 189; cup evaporated milk. 189; cup c...
Miss Frobisher's Cottage
New England Miniatures Links. New England Miniatures Blog. Miss Frobisher in her kitchen as the late afternoon sunlight streams in. This picture was published with several others in Dollhouse Miniatures Magazine. The cottage, twixt village and forest. A peaceful abode. The stones that compose the porch floor are made of drywall compound. The leading in the windows is from Gallery Glass. This is the grate I whipped up for the fireplace. It's made from a couple of half scale balusters and basswood. Miss Fr...
