Grown Up, Now What? Searching for Direction and Purpose in Life's Sea of Opportunities. August 6, 2015. Last Friday I experienced something I hadn’t in a long time: I considered calling in sick so I could finish reading my book. I typically drive in to work a bit early to take advantage of lighter traffic. I spend that extra time either writing blog posts (like this one) or reading. Grown Up, Now What? Searching for Direction and Purpose in Life's Sea of Opportunities. How I Learned to Love Science Fiction. June 16, 2016. I love the advantages I had being a kid in the 1970s and a teenager in the 1980s. Queue the montage of avocado green and harvest gold appliances and kids flying down the street on their bikes morphing into ’80’s haired battles on Atari and DOS programming on Commodore 64s. Grown Up, Now What? Searching for Direction and Purpose in Life's Sea of Opportunities. May 26, 2016. When I am learning something new, I like to go in and press buttons. Ideally I will know what not to press (the ejector seat, “delete all”, etc), but I’m relatively fearless when it comes to technical things. I think that comes a great deal with when computers came into my life. That trusty Commodore … [You know you want to read more…]. July 30, 2015. I got a new phone! Posted in: So Many Choices.

Grown Up, Now What? Searching for Direction and Purpose in Life's Sea of Opportunities. August 3, 2015. With all the back-to-school sales. On now, I was thinking back to when I would look forward to stocking up. In getting ready for junior high gym. Class, I wanted to make sure I got everything on the school-provided list. One of the items listed was tube socks. Asked me if I really wanted tube socks. I had never worn them before, but since my rule-following tendencies. I found yet another use for them a...

Acting My (Vint)Age: Things That Have the Number 52
http://olderthanvintage.blogspot.com/2012/01/things-that-have-number-52.html
Saturday, January 21, 2012. Things That Have the Number 52. Weeks in a year. Cards in a deck. White keys on a piano. Parallel (degrees North) that passes through Lower Saxony, Inner Mongolia, and Alaska. Atomic number of tellurium on the periodic table of elements. Country code for international calls to Mexico. Yes, today is my birthday and I am fifty-two years old. Not young. Not old. An in-betweenish age. And what’s a birthday without cake? The first was a dense, flat cake made in a round cake pan.
Acting My (Vint)Age: September 2013

Thursday, September 19, 2013. T hese fabulous new additions to my cactus collection do not have thorns, spines, glochids, trichomes, hooks, needles, or any other exterior unpleasantness. They are soft, squishy and perfectly huggable! Outside on a visit with their spiny cousins. Cactus made by the amazing Urban Rustic. Visit her blog here. Completely crocheted, from the pots all the way to the flowers. Happily (for me), she developed a case of compulsive cactus-crocheting. 65279;. The organ pipe cactus.
Acting My (Vint)Age: July 2013
http://olderthanvintage.blogspot.com/2013_07_01_archive.html
Monday, July 1, 2013. I bet you weren’t expecting that. For years I’ve bathed these two separately. This time I thought I would just try putting them in the tub together. If it worked, I could save time, water, and a lot of back strain. Neither dog likes being in water, and shampoo is just adding insult to injury. They were so miserable that it didn’t occur to them to cause any mischief. I got them both clean in half the time. Looks like that moment of discovery is near. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom).
Acting My (Vint)Age: August 2013
http://olderthanvintage.blogspot.com/2013_08_01_archive.html
Saturday, August 31, 2013. Here’s a dress I sewed up as an interim project while I was caught in a conundrum with another dress (to be explained in detail next week). The cotton fabric is an odd mixture of colors and patterns: an uneven pink and orange plaid-like design, framing turquoise cacti, all on a taupe background. I can’t decide whether this represents 50s kitsch or 80s clash. Anyway, the print somehow looks cute and I like the cacti, of course. Still, it’s not too much of a disappointment ...
Acting My (Vint)Age: Piemaker's Day Off
http://olderthanvintage.blogspot.com/2013/01/piemakers-day-off.html
Monday, January 14, 2013. For the first time ever. The Piemaker declined to make a pie. Actually it was worse than that: he said I had a choice – he could spend Saturday taking down broken tree branches and clearing the yard, or he could make a pie. Well! I chose the tree branches, and it serves him right, I say. To recover from the shock of it all,. This is the Raspberry-Marzipan Tart. The tart is delicious! Yes, the Piemaker got to eat some of the pie after he spent all day working in the yard. I hope ...
Acting My (Vint)Age: November 2013
http://olderthanvintage.blogspot.com/2013_11_01_archive.html
Tuesday, November 12, 2013. Are you a fan of Craftsy. I’ve spent enough time on there to warrant the full expression: fanatic. I’m sure I’ve mentioned my lust for learning: the multiple 4-year degrees that I dragged out to 6 or 8 years just for the joy of taking classes, the online writing courses, the annual art retreat… those were the days. Unfortunately, education is exceedingly expensive, and taking classes just for fun has gone beyond the reach of my fixed income. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Prolifi...
Acting My (Vint)Age: December 2013
http://olderthanvintage.blogspot.com/2013_12_01_archive.html
Tuesday, December 31, 2013. I did not decorate for the holidays this year, but I didn't have to go too far to see the traditional bright colors of the season. The garden is full of bright red, green, and gold. Faded gold grape leaves (and two little dogs behind them). Turns red at the tips when temperatures drop. 65279;. Exuberantly red berries of the. Acting My (Vint)Age: May 2013
http://olderthanvintage.blogspot.com/2013_05_01_archive.html
Saturday, May 18, 2013. It was such a simple plan: I’d move some of the stuff off the shelves so I could brush the feather duster over the top layer or two of grime. Then drag the fabric bins out into the hall and run the vacuum around. A good couple of hours and I’d be done, with a nice clean room. That was Tuesday morning. This was the situation by Wednesday afternoon:. Wednesday, May 8, 2013. Is It May Already? Looks like two whole weeks flew by while I snoozed (actually sneezed, mostly). I pulled thi...
Acting My (Vint)Age: January 2014
http://olderthanvintage.blogspot.com/2014_01_01_archive.html
Tuesday, January 14, 2014. I started with the tutorial from PC at Meijo's Joy. I drew a cactus-shaped paper pattern that looked like a good size for some 2-inch clay pots I got at the craft store. I used the pattern to cut out 6 felt pieces for each cactus. I made the base narrow, but this was unnecessary since it gets hidden in the pot, and it also made it more difficult to stuff, so I think next time I will make the base wider. I used a very short stitch and a 1/4 inch seam allowance. For the plain pot...
Acting My (Vint)Age: March 2014
http://olderthanvintage.blogspot.com/2014_03_01_archive.html
Tuesday, March 25, 2014. Every year when I see little green shoots poking out of the ground I become hopeful for a healthy, green summer vegetable garden in spite of past experience. That in less than two months the blistering-hot sun will scorch leaves, daytime temperatures will cause chronic wilting, and all the stress will make the plants susceptible to pests and diseases. But this is such a cheerful sight! This year I decided to just empty all my old tomato seed packets (some of them 7 years old!
