Thursday, October 29, 2009. The island is not without its scars. There is poverty and the street and beach merchants can be aggressive in plying their trade. However, the population as a whole possesses a warmth and a humor that is characteristically Jamaican and visitors miss a real opportunity for adventure if they fail to engage the people beyond the boundaries of the hotels and resorts. Jamaican cuisine is likewise unique and richly flavored with the fusions of tastes both familiar and strange. J...

Wednesday, May 27, 2009. Up the Nile - Mary Powell. The plane has landed, the door opens and we walk down the stairs to the tarmac. There is a balmy breeze, un-expected but greatly appreciated. We are in Cairo! Streamlined buses take us to the new airport terminal. We are met there by medical examiners, who check our temperature and on we go. There are counters to purchase our visas (15.00usd), then on to immigration. I hand over my passport and visa and what is this? Am I to be deported? I fall asleep r...

Friday, December 9, 2011. Use them or lose them! A few years ago Aeroplan put an expiry date on everyone’s points. They gave your points a 7 year shelf life. This started on the 01 January 2007. Any points that were in your account at time had 7 years to be redeemed. On the 01 January 2014 the first bunch of 7 year old points will expire. So why do should I care about this now? Get ahead of the curve and spend your points before the Aeroplan induced points panic starts for real. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom).

Saturday, May 5, 2012. Who knew buzzing around Vancouver in a large jet would be so much fun? After flying through the uprights of Lions Gate bridge our Airbus 320 gently skipped off Burrard inlet before flying under Second Narrows bridge. The joystick was warm and damp from my anxious palms and I was grinning like a fiend in control of something a fiend should never be in control of. Did we just hit a boat? A quick lesson on avionics (Stay in the middle of the air, avoid the edges) and it was time to fly.
