We have been following and supporting with interest the work of The Foundations Project in Zimbabwe for some time. The Foundations Project is run by Charlotte Haggie and Martha Damu, two Zimbabwean women who are passionate about the education and care of children in their country. Charlotte and Martha work closely with staff on the ground to ensure that children are given the best possible education and care and that they are given the foundations for a better future. Rex and Sue Smith wanted to do something to help at-risk children improve their reading and comprehension skills. Their goal was to enable disadvantaged kids to compete in society with children of all income levels. So in 2003, the Smiths established Hand-in-Hand, their family foundation, to launch Read a Book, See the World. An innovative reading program for children at a Detroit elementary school. Could be the model for other efforts to help at-risk children reach their full potential.

Cedar Centre was originally founded in 1987 as York Region Abuse Program (YRAP). It is a non-profit charitable organization dedicated to eliminating the effects of childhood abuse. Our programs include intensive trauma-specific therapy for children, youth, adults and seniors who have experienced all forms of childhood trauma and abuse. We also provide psychoeducational support for caregivers, trauma-informed group programming for youth and adults, as well as outreach and prevention programming.
