Lendir ini akan menyebabkan oksigen tidak lancar masuk ke dalam paru-paru , lubang semakin sempit dan akan mengeluarkan bunyi desir yang tidak menyenangkan terutama pada waktu malam. Ini mungkin kelihatan sedikit, namun serangan ini amat melesukan bagi seorang pesakit asma yang terpaksa ditahan di hospital dan menyebabkan aktiviti harian mereka terganggu.
