Staff at hostels are usually young, friendly and will know all of the great things to do in the locale, so are perfect new friends. They have also taken the decision to do a job which involves mundane administrative tasks in return for living in a beautiful place and meeting lots of new people. And you are a new people! Impose yourself on a group. Don’t be the drunk one.

In general everyone is lovely and has probably had the same panic as you, just at a different point. And probably sweated loads at the time too. I would just recommend actually thinking through what you are going to do before you go, perhaps book a tour. Offers all of these things and at new lower prices!
