Cilla Black R.I.P. | Jakartass' Music
https://jakartassmusic.wordpress.com/2015/08/03/cilla-black-r-i-p
Cilla Black R.I.P. On August 3, 2015. The death yesterday of Cilla Black at the age of 72 fills most Brits over the age of 30 with a sense of sadness. I can remember hearing and liking, but not buying, her early singles, recorded shortly after John Lennon had plucked the cloakroom attendant from the Cavern Club, famed as the grooming ground for Liverpool beat groups. Her first number one hit was this Burt Bacharach and Hal David song …. 8230; but I preferred the Dusty Springfield. She had more soul.

WHO are you? | Jakartass' Music
https://jakartassmusic.wordpress.com/2015/08/07/who-are-you
On August 7, 2015. I’ve never been a great fan of The Who. 50 years young this year and still touring. I did like their hit. People try to put us down. Fifty years later, the song still resonates but now the talk is of euthanasia …. On Saturday 29th August 1970 I managed to sleep through most of their set. At the Isle of Wight Festival. But they didn’t take the stage until 2am; it was cold and I was snug under my Czechoslavakian army greatcoat. 8211; I’d hiked there, they’d helicoptered in. Enter your em...

Dreams | Jakartass' Music
https://jakartassmusic.wordpress.com/2015/08/03/dreams
On August 3, 2015. I woke up a few mornings ago and the after effects of that sleep linger with me still. I’d been on a vaguely familiar dream journey. I was close to mental collapse (. So was seeking sanctuary somewhere familiar, perhaps Eastbourne, the town on the south coast of England where I spent childhood holidays. To get there I hitch-hiked, and caught a train. I’m not sure now how I met Donald Trump. And that was the catalyst for this hopefully mostly unfamiliar compilation from my archives.

Vertigo | Jakartass' Music
https://jakartassmusic.wordpress.com/2015/07/28/vertigo
On July 28, 2015. Some folk think it strange that with my height, which is far above that of the average Indonesian, I’m afraid of heights. I’ve climbed a few volcanoes and a couple of times, having misread my map, inadvertently climbed a couple of rock faces, but there’s no way I could live in a penthouse suite, even though Jokowi has given me permission to do so. But this is a music blog, my music blog, so why this compilation? For a while I’d buy everything on Vertigo. Which I’ve never appreciat...

Photograph: Bowman Bowman/Getty Images/F1online RM. This is a photo of a ‘Strawberry Moon’ over the ancient stone circle of Stonehenge on Salisbury Plain in south-west England. It was presumably taken on June 20th, or thereabouts, in 1967. I know that because this article. And thus was introduced to the ‘Canterbury Scene’...At the co...

Home thoughts from abroad. Alien thoughts from home. Image of the Week 166 (Lokananta). Posted by Jakartass under Culture. At 9:00 am on Sunday 12 July 2015. No Comments. With a seminar/discussion to attend in Yogyakarta this past week about internationalising Indonesia’s music, it seemed obvious to combine this with a visit to Indonesia’s oldest recording studio in Solo, an hour or so commuter train ride away. For now, you can read more here. And see more photos from our visit here. The dedicated and un...

Gnossienne | Jakartass' Music
https://jakartassmusic.wordpress.com/2015/07/23/gnossienne
On July 23, 2015. Last week I posted a compilation of tracks by western musicians who have demonstrated the influence of Indonesian music forms. Minimalist musicians, especially Steve Reich, had been attracted to the many layers of the repetitiveness of gamelan. The attraction of gamelan. One such western composer was Erik Satie. Written for the piano, and the Gnossiennes. First, listen and watch. Played as Satie probably intended. Now please download this compilation. Alexander Baboian –. Eddie Hardin&#...
