A stitch in time. The space in between. March 30, 2016. The Sonian Forest in March. Oil on canvass. Bellever Forest near Postbridge, Dartmoor. Oil on canvas. It is not the first time I have attempted to paint trees. An encounter in Dartmoor many years ago first compelled me to paint woodland and I have always wanted to return to the subject matter. Lao-Tzu once said: “. We mould clay into a pot,. But it is the emptiness inside. That makes the vessel useful.”. And the paint brushes…. My beloved oil paints.

A stitch in time. A stitch in time. The alliterated world of infanthood. March 15, 2016. Which brings me to the topic of this tutorial: The nicely alliterated activity of ‘Tummy-Time’. I decided that in order to embrace tummy-time properly with Josh there was nothing for it but to embark on creating a baby play mat for him. Or should that be ‘play-pad’ or ‘my-mini-mat’? There was rather a lot of the woodland print left over after making the ‘ taggie toy. The completed play mat. And, gift alert! 1 x piece...

A stitch in time. A stitch in time. Every pocket tells a story. April 30, 2016. You would be mistaken for thinking that the bits and pieces I find daily in Zoë’s pockets are worthless tat. To her they are scavenged treasure, prized possessions and a ticket to an endless world of imagination. Good luck to anyone who tries to empty them into the bin. I do however draw the line at collecting cigarette butts. So I shall start this post with a story from yesterday’s pocket:. I used a lot of scraps, but I also...

A stitch in time. The space in between. The space in between. March 30, 2016. We are lucky to live a stone’s throw from the Sonian forest, so one Sunday afternoon we took a stroll amongst the trees. Trees are many things: For Zoë the budding adventurer they are a climbing or hiding opportunity; to Josh looking up from his pram they cast interesting shadows and patterns against the pale March sunshine;… Continue reading The space in between. A stitch in time. A stitch in time. What is it about labels? February 15, 2016. February 23, 2016. Develops your baby’s brain like no other toy on the market. But baby really just likes the label. Baby toys are designed with state-of-the-art child development research in mind. We are told so on the packaging. Our adult brain tells us so also: just look at the Penrose-tile-formation-high-contrast-mirror-textured design of this [insert any baby toy]. But the baby brain sees the label. Does it taste good?

We all know the answer to this classic joke like the back of our hand, but the theoretical physicist husband in the hive (if you’ve read the ‘about’ you’ll know that I did forewarn you) had a recent epiphany that this joke is in fact a pun: Dear chicken is crossing the road to reach chicken nirvana, paradise, moksha, heaven or any other afterlife it prefers. In the Land of Invented Languages by Arika Okrent
A lively, informative, insightful examination of artificial languages - who invents them, why, and why most of them fail. I loved this book. Will Shortz, Crossword Editor, New York Times. Michael Erard, author of Um: Slips, Stumbles, and Verbal Blunders, and What They Mean. In the Land of Invented Languages' is a delight to read. It's humorous, intelligent, entertaining and highly informative. And it's a great source of knowledge about human languages and why they exasperate some people - because...Okren...
