Filling in the Blanks – guc devos

Devotionals from Grace Union church. Filling in the Blanks. November 11, 2016. November 13, 2016. Have you ever played Mad Libs? It’s a silly little game where you are asked to provide a mixture of nouns, verbs, and other parts of speech without knowing the context in which they’ll be used, and then you get to plug them into a story and see what kind of (usually silly) results you can get. For example, take a moment to think of three words:. A noun (a person, place, or thing). How did yours turn out?

Get excited! – guc devos

Devotionals from Grace Union church. November 18, 2016. November 17, 2016. You know what I like most about Philip? His enthusiasm. Take another look at Acts 8:26-40. And see if you can spot it. An angel tells him to go to a particular place, and he’s on his way. He sees a chariot, the Spirit tells him to go join the Ethiopian official, and he doesn’t shuffle over nervously — he’s running for it. Because that answer would be the foot in the door, so to speak, the way to open up the conversation. Their tal...

Going away, but not gone. – guc devos

Devotionals from Grace Union church. Going away, but not gone. September 21, 2016. September 20, 2016. Ever have a friend or family member move away? Jesus’ disciples were about to face just such a bittersweet moment, though they didn’t know it, yet. Would it surprise you to know this time, the One who was leaving would be giving gifts to those staying behind? Christ spent 40 days proving He was alive. Why is this important? The resurrection of Christ changes everything! He also spent those final days sh...

Devotionals from Grace Union church. The Dispute: John Mark. March 10, 2017. March 9, 2017. Today, we’re going to take a similar approach for John Mark. Based on the few facts we are presented, I think it’s safe to conclude John Mark was younger in the faith, at least. Paul and Barnabas were debating bringing him along, after all. I don’t get the impression that John Mark was under his own authority to choose to go with whomever he wanted. The decision was theirs. Maybe a family emergency called him away.

Generosity – guc devos

Devotionals from Grace Union church. October 17, 2016. October 16, 2016. How much does a person really need? I’m not sure I could manage such a huge shift, but I thought of those minimalists as I read the last few verses of Acts 4. In Acts 4:32-37. We find a very remarkable description of the priorities of the early Church — one that might seem as extreme to us as the minimalists of our day. 8220;There was not a needy person among them” – Acts 4:34. I wonder if we realize just how much we have. A little ...

Free Gifts – guc devos
https://gucdevos.wordpress.com/2016/11/23/free-gifts
Devotionals from Grace Union church. November 23, 2016. The term “free gift” always perturbed my English teachers for being redundant, repetitive, and saying the same thing over and over and over again. In this case, however, I think the distinction of a “free” gift is important. But they know the big gift is still hidden in one of those cleverly disguised boxes. It should — but it should also sound familiar. We do the same thing to God all the time. Simon the Magician’s story, found in Acts 8:9-25.

From Persecution to Joy – guc devos

Devotionals from Grace Union church. From Persecution to Joy. November 9, 2016. November 8, 2016. As we pick up where we left off last time, we find the Church in a dangerous situation. As Acts 8:1-8. So, just how did they go from persecution to joy? Can we learn how to find joy in the midst of trouble? I believe we can. The Church would not win this fight using physical violence to destroy her enemies; they would only win this fight by spiritual warfare, turning the enemy into family. I can readily ...

Devotionals from Grace Union church. February 22, 2017. Last time we looked at Acts 14, we paused our DVRs, we placed our bookmarks on the moment before Paul instructed the lame man to stand to his feet. We talked about some of the ways we can grow to recognize God’s plans when He starts to reveal them, noting Paul’s love for the Scriptures, lifestyle of prayer, listening to the Holy Spirit, and living in Christ. In spite of all those, Paul still could’ve missed out on God’s marvelous work. You see, one ...

Acts: Uncommon – guc devos
https://gucdevos.wordpress.com/2016/09/19/1210/comment-page-1
Devotionals from Grace Union church. September 19, 2016. September 18, 2016. Ever get the feeling that your life isn’t quite on the right track? Had big plans, but they never seem to work out? If you’ve ever felt the same way, I have some good news for you: you’re not alone. To me it does. I think if you’d told the 120 disciples who met in the upper room in Acts that about 2000 years later, best estimates show more than 2.2 billion people now follow Christ, and is the largest faith in the world...And see...
