Joy in Japan

Gozo mi vida en Guatemala: aka, I enjoy my life in Guatemala. I think that title is appropriately Japan-eque with it's "enjoy" usage, and also serves as a very loose tie to what this blog once was. I have been living in Antigua, Guatemala for the past 10 days and have about 15 more to go before I head home. I'll just use this post to say the following things that I have learned/thought these past few days:. Yes, do, Ireland was still good craic (craic being pronounced crack, and being Irish for fun).

Joy in Japan: 11月 2008

http://joyofjapan.blogspot.com/2008_11_01_archive.html

These are the vocabulary words I had to practice with the class the other day. I would say them and a class of 40 students repeats after me:. Help, run, touch, tell, someone, ear, assistance dog, deaf. It made me think 2 things. 1- those first 5 words sound like someone is reporting abuse. 2- why on earth are we teaching 13 year- olds the phrase "assistance dog"? Apologies for the shaking camera work and fuzziness.). I'll admit it, living in Japan has it's perks. I was thinking of weekend plans, and ...

Joy in Japan: 9月 2009

http://joyofjapan.blogspot.com/2009_09_01_archive.html

The last of my posts. Unless you want to hear about what I did on the farm, or the progress I'm making on getting my niece and nephews to love me more, I won't have anything good to say. Although compared with the excitement of Russia I'm sure this will pale in comparison. Alas, bear with me? Yes, do, Ireland was still good craic (craic being pronounced crack, and being Irish for fun). Which lead to going out to celebrate with them afterwards, and having a good number of people ask me if I was her sister...

Joy in Japan: 3月 2009

http://joyofjapan.blogspot.com/2009_03_01_archive.html

I went to South Korea and I uploaded my photos here. So check them out. My dad and his friend Henry came to Japan. Highlights include: astonished school children, plum blossoms, and Universal Studios Japan. My penpal came to visit for 2 weeks. Highlights include: sumo, Nagasaki, natural hot springs/"the hells", and climbing a volcano! Today I am off to the Philippines for a week, with trips to Bohol's chocolate hills. Photos and proper commentary will follow, once I am home and sans visitors. Honest.

Joy in Japan: 6月 2009

http://joyofjapan.blogspot.com/2009_06_01_archive.html

I’m going to miss: my students. Students in class who have no idea what they are saying, but say it very enthusiastically. Students in class who are clearly not interested in English, because I can identify with them with my relationship with French. Students who yell “good morning” to me from the 3rd floor balcony of the Junior high when I bike into school in the morning. The boys that have decided they love me. The girls who are fascinated by what I wear and my accessories. 4 The season of leaving....

Joy in Japan: 1月 2009

http://joyofjapan.blogspot.com/2009_01_01_archive.html

One of the most common questions I get from Japanese people is if it is colder in Canada. To which I reply "Yes, but in Canada we have central heating." You can correctly assume from that statement that Japan does not have central heating. I am told that in the far north of Japan, they do! But here. they don't. My heating options for my apartment are as follows:. 2 Space heater. I have one, and I can run on either 1200volts or 600volts. It does an alright job of keeping the edge out of the air. Here is t...

Six Months in Kigali: It's gonna take a lot to drag me away from you...

http://sixmonthsinkigali.blogspot.com/2009/01/its-gonna-take-lot-to-drag-me-away-from.html

Friday, January 9, 2009. It's gonna take a lot to drag me away from you. I'm not even remotely ready for this. I had to physically remove myself from my laptop the other morning to avoid applying for a 12-month position here in Kigali. I know I need to go 'home'. The problem is that I. When my flight to Kilimanjaro just before Christmas took off, I felt this overwhelming, heady sense of. When you can live. I didn't realise this was going to hurt so much. Six Months in Kigali: June 2008

http://sixmonthsinkigali.blogspot.com/2008_06_01_archive.html

Wednesday, June 25, 2008. So I've been here for three days, and so far, so good. The people are all really neat- the more they talk about their internships the more I keep thinking "Hey, I want to go back to school to study that. Will be arriving. I'm really excited for that, because these are people actually doing the work that all of us want to do. I had a great (and LONG! Okay Day Two of Intercultural Learning. Here's hoping. Six Months in Kigali: July 2008

http://sixmonthsinkigali.blogspot.com/2008_07_01_archive.html

Thursday, July 31, 2008. Un jour a Kigali. Funny how one day can go back and forth from good to bad to great. We briefly had enough water this morning to flush, one and a half times. We also got home from Claire's house to find a refridgerator (! So I was optimistic heading to the bus park, although I shouldn't have been. I've had bad bus luck as of late and have revoked my "superstar" status. On Tuesday, I waited. An hour and a half. I got to talk to my mum and Leah today! As I'm making supper tonight (...

Six Months in Kigali: too little time

http://sixmonthsinkigali.blogspot.com/2009/01/too-little-time.html

Monday, January 26, 2009. Not too little time left here. Well, that too. But too little time to blog. I have all these great things to write about. But no time. So I'll make a list, and I'll get to them sooner or later. Moto accidents (not me, thankfully, and she's alright, even more thankfully). Music on the bus. Friends I've made (maybe with pictures). And something else I bet I forgot. Maybe I'll wait til I get back to Canada (I leave in 5 days, pretty much. Eek). February 10, 2009 at 8:01 PM. In whic...

Six Months in Kigali: in which i decide that coming home will be okay

http://sixmonthsinkigali.blogspot.com/2009/01/in-which-i-decide-that-coming-home-will.html

Sunday, January 25, 2009. In which i decide that coming home will be okay. By this time next week, I will have my feet firmly on Canadian soil. I can't even begin to believe that my time in Rwanda is coming to an end. but I've resigned myself to going back home. To see the people I love, the people I'm coming home for. To eat good food. To shower, in hot water, every day. I hate when people write about. But God. back to *Canada*? Am I completely f* *ing crazy? I think it is inapropriet. View my complete ...

Six Months in Kigali: December 2008

Thursday, December 18, 2008. A non-Africa topic (partially). Breaking away from my usual range of snippets of life in Rwanda for a minute, because today is a momentous occasion. Big girl turned 5 today. I cannot believe I am the mother of a five year old child. Not a baby, not a toddler, not a preschooler. A real, honest-to-goodness. How on earth did this happen? Back to Africa. I am off to Tanzania tomorrow morning (Rwandair, I do not need to be at the airport at 5am. really! Links to this post. That ba...

Six Months in Kigali: October 2008

http://sixmonthsinkigali.blogspot.com/2008_10_01_archive.html

Friday, October 31, 2008. Until I have time to write my version of last Sunday's tree-planting extravaganza, here's what Kigali's New Times. Five University graduates from Canada currently interning with several organisations in Kigali on Sunday fulfilled their pledge of planting 500 cypress trees. Before leaving their homeland in July, the Canadian group made a pact to directly offset the carbon emissions from their air travel by planting trees in their respective host countries. 8220;In fact, a running...

Six Months in Kigali: The things they carry

http://sixmonthsinkigali.blogspot.com/2009/01/things-they-carry.html

Wednesday, January 21, 2009. The things they carry. Babies, from the teeny newborns nestled in tightly to toddlers big enough to trot unsteadily on their own two legs struggling to escape. Tiny feet sticking out over mothers' hips, toes wiggling. On heads (cushioned with a banana leaf ring):. Baskets of produce, off to the market. Huge 100 kilograms bags of rice, flour, wheat. Branches of huge green bananas. Jerrycans of milk, water, or petrol. Hoes, shovels and saws. Anything you'd carry on your head.

Six Months in Kigali: November 2008

http://sixmonthsinkigali.blogspot.com/2008_11_01_archive.html

Thursday, November 27, 2008. Thanksgiving, Take Two. Today's best part of being an expat: we got to celebrate American Thanksgiving, because one of Logan's new roommates is from the States and was missing home. Delicious, delicious, delicious. Links to this post. Friday, November 21, 2008. That while we breathe, we hope. I spent most of the night of November 4. And the early morning of November 5. This was something big. Would his inexperience count against him? 8221; I have never welcomed an early morni...

The Joy of Jacob

The Joy of Jacob. Perservering Against Niemann-Pick Disease Sept. 20, 2010 - Nov. 15, 2012. We originally created this blog to keep family and friends updated about our little man Jacob, who was diagnosed in the summer of 2011 with a rare, life-limiting genetic disease called Niemann-Pick (type A/B). Jacob earned his angel wings on November 15, 2012, but remains our daily inspiration and constant reminder that we must live in the moment and fill each day with JOY, LAUGHTER and an abundance of LOVE. For the Joy of Japan. An update on our children. We’ve spent the last couple posts sharing about our burden and vision for ministry in Japan. JARGON!

The trainwrecks, tortures, and tragedies of scholarly prose. Monday, December 10, 2012. I'm a big fan of this tumblr, which uses looped clips to complete the phrase "When." followed by some absurd nugget gleaned from the academic life. A reader recently suggested. Enjoy the clip of Oprah! Posted by aolivez at 7:10 PM. Sunday, December 02, 2012. What good are "relative, contingent truths"? The contradictions are rich: on the one hand the postmodern deluge of images seems to suggest that there can be no a ...
