Mountains, movies, and moments, or writings by al. Thursday, August 31, 2006. Coffee break in Delhi. I spent most of yesterday with my cousin. We chatted for hours and the topics included Maldives politics, the rise of burugas, and the latest gossip about Carnation cousins. I can't reveal what was said but no one was spared! We took a coffee break in a trendy coffee house and saw young Delhi yuppies chilling out. Posted by Al at 11:46 PM. Wednesday, August 30, 2006. Also, Amin and Sharif, many thanks for...

Mountains, movies, and moments, or writings by al. Thursday, February 02, 2006. It's been a while since I've had time to update the blog so, many apologies to all. First of all the photo, taken by Shareef, shows Eriyadu from above and the red circle marks the Raiy Kulhi brackish water. In addition to Raiy Kulhi, Eriyadu has 4 other "lakes". Azeeza lies buried not far from the beach, in the centre of the curve. Posted by Al at 1:05 AM. Trying to evolve as a human being. View my complete profile. EVEREST W...

Mountains, movies, and moments, or writings by al. Thursday, June 08, 2006. It's been a while since I've posted anything, but here's something I'd like to share with people. Recently Narco and I visited Addu Atoll (arieal photo by Shareef) to carry out a socio-economic impact assessment, which involved interviewing some of the more disadvantaged members of the community. One family we visited lived on what can only be described as margins of existence. The island administration is aware of all this- -the...

Mountains, movies, and moments, or writings by al. Monday, March 13, 2006. In some ways, editing the "Himalayan Dreams" was harder than actually doing the trek but I'm happy to report it's now done, hooray! Hopefully, we'll manage to interest an international broadcaster and also TVM, the national TV station. I agree with him, of course, but i can't help wondering how much more easy it would be to leave everything behind and walk in the desolate, windswept ridge above Dingboche (4350m), in Nepal, forever.

Mountains, movies, and moments, or writings by al. Saturday, December 31, 2005. Feature film in 2006? Narco and I discussed work for 2006 and a feature film Raiy Kulhi might be in the offing. Raiy Kulhi was originally written by Shareef as a poem, then a screenplay, but now Narco and I have re-written the script with significant changes. But we've kept Shareef's characters, basic story, and some of the verses. It would also be nice to have an interview with her. Posted by Al at 9:54 AM. In the initial st...

Mountains, movies, and moments, or writings by al. Sunday, November 13, 2005. Flying out to Lukla. Katmandu; 1,235 metres; 15 celcius. We're leaving on the trek tomorrow. More shopping done today and, of course, most of it with the help of our shopping assistants. We're in Thamel, the tourist area of Katmandu, where there's an incredible variety of eating places. I wouldn't mind staying here for a few months or even an year. Posted by Al at 10:26 PM. Saturday, November 12, 2005. We were helped enourmousl...

Mountains, movies, and moments, or writings by al. Monday, October 02, 2006. This is just a brief post to let everyone know I'm back in the Maldives. I'm experiencing symptoms of my now familiar post-Himalayan blues. I'm finding it difficult to feel I'm really back in the Maldives and although interesting and promising work seem to be in the offing, it's an effort to summon the necessary concentration and passion. Yesterday I went for a swim, so I may be settling down sooner than I think.

Mountains, movies, and moments, or writings by al. Thursday, November 09, 2006. Himalayan Dreams selected for Kathmandu International Mountain Film Festival KIMFF 2006. We will also run a modest media campaign in the Maldives that will hopefully attract buyers for the film, so that we can have funds to do more of this kind of work. Posted by Al at 10:36 PM. Mountains, movies, and moments, or writings by al. Friday, January 06, 2006. More on Raiy Kulhi. Beneath the shade of a tree. On this island where strangers dwell. Separated by miles of sea. My flesh and bones have become. Elements of the surrounding. Trees, grass and lakes". From "Azeeza", one of the poems in the book "Memories" by Ahmed Shareef Nafees. Shareef based the above verses on this true story and later wrote a screenplay on which Narco and I based our screenplay of Raiy Kulhi. In principle the...
