Life at Sylvan House: April 2015

http://www.lifeatsylvanhouse.blogspot.com/2015_04_01_archive.html

Tuesday, 28 April 2015. A Bake for April. Thoughts of any type of al fresco eating were sharply blown away by the arrival of a "Polar Plume" this morning with big fat snowflakes and a windchill of -4C - eek! The children were wondering hopefully if there would be a snow day! It didn't settle though and the Big Coat was back on for the school run. A shock to the system after the beautiful weather we've had. In any case the Big Coat is staying firmly on the coat stand for the moment. 50g plain white flour.

Life at Sylvan House: Watermelons, Chickens and a Calming Walk

http://www.lifeatsylvanhouse.blogspot.com/2015/07/watermelons-chickens-and-calming-walk.html

Tuesday, 14 July 2015. Watermelons, Chickens and a Calming Walk. Two priceless snippets of conversation with little Miss L from earlier this evening:. Yesterday I bought her two new swimming costumes as her others were looking decidedly tatty. Me: Which one do you like best? Her: Ooh, difficult to choose but I think I like the striped one with the red bows best. Me: Oh yes, why is that then? Her: Well, I think the pink one is a bit plain. How can you say that - it's got HOT PINK watermelons all over it!

Life at Sylvan House: Buxton Well Dressings 2015

http://www.lifeatsylvanhouse.blogspot.com/2015/07/buxton-well-dressings-2015.html

Thursday, 9 July 2015. Buxton Well Dressings 2015. Here in Derbyshire, we are into the Well Dressing season, with many villages and towns decorating their wells with natural materials such as flower petals, leaves and twigs pressed into a clay base, mounted on a wooden frame. In Buxton, the wells are always dressed in the first week of July and there is a church procession around the town to bless all three wells. The final well is St Ann's Well in the Crescent area and until recently was the only remain...

Life at Sylvan House: June 2014

http://www.lifeatsylvanhouse.blogspot.com/2014_06_01_archive.html

Saturday, 28 June 2014. Reasons to be Cheerful. During the week whilst in the supermarket, I struck up a conversation with a lady in the checkout queue. She remarked that she'd spotted me busily crossing things off my list and I replied that I like to be organised with having a busy life and three primary school aged children. She said her children had grown up and left home and "enjoy it while it lasts, dear.". 3 A delightful sunny morning walk with three lovely friends. Round the reservoir and a sc...

Carolien's stitches: November 2014

http://caroliensstitches.blogspot.com/2014_11_01_archive.html

Tuesday, 25 November 2014. A week off . Have you spotted the white veil over the lawn this morning? Bird bath frozen, pansies heads down, white leaves . We had a touch of frost earlier on, but I think King Winter has really arrived now. Time for my cherished scarf from Jenny, I took it out a few days ago. Mmm, so lovely, that scarf. Yes, there are remnants of summer, nature continues to amaze me. But in a few days the leaves were swirling down, almost in a hurry . See the tree now, by the way? Oops, you ...

Carolien's stitches: April 2015

http://caroliensstitches.blogspot.com/2015_04_01_archive.html

Thursday, 30 April 2015. I hope you're all doing well. It's still cold here in Holland, we even had a late touch of frost. Time for some more warmth now, time to put the geraniums out! Yes, I'm politely waiting till the ice Saints have greeted us and have left the country for this year . The plants and trees are turning green rapidly though, thanks to the rain we had. Talking about green: I made my first olive green garland on the. Sampler. Lovely colours, I'm enjoying this new start. Home of a Quilter.

Carolien's stitches: January 2015

http://caroliensstitches.blogspot.com/2015_01_01_archive.html

Friday, 30 January 2015. I hope you're having a nice day. We had a cold but nice day, partly in . Zutphen. Zutphen is an old Hanseatic city, a hanzestad. At a 40 minutes drive from Zevenaar. Fleur and I had never been there before. I knew it had to be a nice old city and it's true! It's a charming place to go, even on a cold winter's day. The parking space in the city centre was a good start: lovely small houses, dated 1873, surrounded it. A good view for Anton Pieck, I guess. See the street? A Catholic ...

Carolien's stitches: February 2015

http://caroliensstitches.blogspot.com/2015_02_01_archive.html

Friday, 27 February 2015. While she's traveling . While Sofia is traveling by train to Zevenaar, I can show you my present for her. Last week I finished the top for her quilt. After more than two years! I had some 'in-betweens', I must confess. A baby quilt, Cock and Yvette's quilt . Since Sofia was so patient to wait and wait and wait, I decided to speed up the process. How on earth do you quilt a thimble quilt? It's a very lively but tiny pattern. Small patterns? Endless. Big patterns? Driving back hom...

Carolien's stitches: An afternoon in Utrecht

http://caroliensstitches.blogspot.com/2015/04/an-afternoon-in-utrecht.html

Thursday, 23 April 2015. An afternoon in Utrecht. Last week we went to Utrecht. André had a meeting there and Fleur was investigating something as well. We decided to combine things and spend the afternoon together, in-between-things. We visited a familiar ice cream 'hot spot' on the Oudegracht (translated: The Old Canal). They had a new flavour:. The cloister part near the Dom. I hope I can make more pictures to show you . Another time. House of the Pope. Sol iustitiae illustra nos,. We're nearly there&...

Thursday, 24 July 2014. In case you haven't seen this yet . Https:/ www.youtube.com/watch? I don't know why I can't get that Youtube link 'in view', but when you click on the link you'll see it anyway.). I do think we have a very good Minister of Foreign Affairs, Frans Timmermans. I highly appreciate his speech to the UN and still have to swallow etc. when seeing this and many other reports about the tragedy of the MH17. I simply have to share this video . Frans Timmermans, yesterday at the airport,.

Carolien's stitches: December 2014

http://caroliensstitches.blogspot.com/2014_12_01_archive.html

Wednesday, 31 December 2014. It's Oudejaarsavond, Old Year's Eve. As we say here in Holland. The fireworks are more and more present and we still have some hours to go till 'the big moment'. I bet everyone is looking back a little (or a lot) . How to start this new year-to-come anyway? Don't understand me wrong: I'm not getting depressed or what, grins. I love my job and focus on 'whatever I can do to make their last hour(s) with their beloved something to look back on with gratefulness and good feel...

Carolien's stitches: March 2015

http://caroliensstitches.blogspot.com/2015_03_01_archive.html

Tuesday, 31 March 2015. When Lotje and I were turning my sewing room upside down, I found two hidden samplers. I made them years ago. The first one was made as an. I put in small patterns that I liked. No prefab pattern . It is a mixture of the traditional red of many, many Dutch samplers and a handful of colours. See the rings and the date? We were engaged during a weekend in Diepenveen, as guests in a special place: the Cistercian cloister of Our Lady of Sion. Fond memories . Dutch greetings, Carolien.

Carolien's stitches: She's dressed in purple

http://caroliensstitches.blogspot.com/2015/05/shes-dressed-in-purple.html

Tuesday, 12 May 2015. She's dressed in purple. The lilac tree is in full bloom here. Plenty to do in the garden . I do as much as I can. I'm way behind in writing mails and visiting blogs, to be honest. I wish I could catch up easily, but my energy level is a bit on the low side. Nothing to worry about, but please have a little patience with me . My legs are protesting a little (much) and when I can I try to sit down . That's good news for my 'stitching department', grins! She's laughing at me. Hopelijk ...

Carolien's stitches: October 2014

http://caroliensstitches.blogspot.com/2014_10_01_archive.html

Friday, 31 October 2014. A bit of this and that (OEQC 3). I'll help you with it. Bright colours, ping, good morning! By Dorte Gjelstrup (Danish Quilting Guild). The cornflower is all done by sewing machine. Hours and hours of work, I presume . By Ine Kaldenbach (The Netherlands). Waking up nicely? Good Time for a funny quilt, with little spools attached. Great in a sewing room! Another splash of colour, so very much MY colours . sorry! Modern paintings, wink . Sewing and sewing with that sewing machine .
