Life in the Land of the Rising Sun

Thursday, July 18, 2013. As I walked home from work last week, I listened to my iPod on shuffle. An eclectic taste in music combined with a 60 gig listening device results in a musical cache almost too diverse and vast to navigate. When I find myself unable to make a musical choice to match my mood, I put the 8000 songs on shuffle. My iPod has been living on shuffle the past few weeks. I feel this is a musical manifestation of my emotions lately. On the other hand, I am feeling melancholy. The feeling I ...

Life in the Land of the Rising Sun: April 2013

http://lifeinthelandoftherisingsun.blogspot.com/2013_04_01_archive.html

Tuesday, April 30, 2013. A Day in Macau. Just a one hour ferry ride from the ports of Hong Kong lies the Macau peninsula. Similar to Hong Kong, Macau boasts a rich, multi-cultural past. Hong Kong is heavily influenced by the British, Macau by the Portuguese. Unfortunately, in the eyes of some, Macau is now most well known for its casinos. It is called the Las Vegas of Asia-and for good reason. More money is lost and won through gambling per year in Macau than in LasVegas. It is a gamblers paradise. You r...

Life in the Land of the Rising Sun: Ogawa Machi: Zakkoku Koubou Craft Micro Brewery

http://lifeinthelandoftherisingsun.blogspot.com/2013/06/ogawa-machi-zakkoku-koubou-craft-micro.html

Tuesday, June 11, 2013. Ogawa Machi: Zakkoku Koubou Craft Micro Brewery. There are many things that Japan does well. On a big scale-miso, sushi, sake, tea, to name a few. But one thing that left both Karl and me disappointed right from the beginning is Japanese beer. Having lived in the upper Midwest of the US of A for all of my adult life until moving to Japan, a huge variety of delicious micro brewed beer was always available. Not terrible…but not great. The phrase that comes to mind when I reflect on ...

Life in the Land of the Rising Sun: November 2012

http://lifeinthelandoftherisingsun.blogspot.com/2012_11_01_archive.html

Wednesday, November 21, 2012. Living with a Host Family. I mentioned in my last post some common stereotypes and what my previous (ignorant) perception of Japan was a few years ago. I also mentioned that living abroad has been one of the most enriching and educational experiences of my life thus far. The first year of living here in Japan was-by far-one of the most intimidating things I have ever undertaken. Moving to Japan was one of the best things I have done. It has been extremely difficult. We alway...

Life in the Land of the Rising Sun: Ogawa Machi: Kawara Sports

http://lifeinthelandoftherisingsun.blogspot.com/2013/05/ogawa-machi-kawara-sports.html

Monday, May 20, 2013. Ogawa Machi: Kawara Sports. Stereotypically, college freshman gain somewhere around fifteen pounds during their first year of university. This is referred to as “the freshman fifteen.”. This did not happen to me. However my first year living in Japan is another story…. During my time in university, I was good at keeping up with daily workouts. When I moved to Japan, my first job had me working from 2 pm to 10 pm. We had a trial day at the gym, and decided to join. Has a lot to offer.

Life in the Land of the Rising Sun: Hong Kong: History Museum and Tea Class

http://lifeinthelandoftherisingsun.blogspot.com/2013/05/hong-kong-history-museum-and-tea-class.html

Wednesday, May 1, 2013. Hong Kong: History Museum and Tea Class. On our final full day in Hong Kong, we went to see an incredible museum exhibit at the History Museum. Called, “The Hong Kong Story.”. If you can only fit one museum visit in to your trip to Hong Kong-this is the one to see. Starting from 400,000,000 years ago, the story begins with the geographical formation of Hong Kong. From the WWII area of the museum; these are Japanese military notes. The exhibit is fantastic. This class was a fantast...

LIFE IN THE LAND OF "L"

LIFE IN THE LAND OF "L". Thursday, July 28, 2011. Be Careful What You Wish For. I remember thinking how nice that sounded without thinking about the fact that you needed to be sick or having surgery to be in the hospital.  So I went home and that night I laid in bed looking out the window at the clear night sky above and made a wish. I wish that I could go to the hospital. Links to this post. Sunday, May 15, 2011. It's funny how 2 1/2 months feels like a lifetime ago. Links to this post. For the past 4 1...

Life in the Land of Lemurs

Life in the Land of Lemurs. Peace Corps Volunteer. 27 months. Madagascar. Wednesday, May 16, 2012. People always say that Peace Corps is like a roller coaster- really high highs, really low lows. This last month has proven that to be true for me more than any other point in my service, and included probably my highest point in country. I have eighty-five days left as of today, and I know that I'm going to try to enjoy each one of them to the fullest. Saturday, March 3, 2012. 8220;I like this photo becaus...

Life in the land of Os

Life in the land of Os. Tuesday, August 21, 2012. Migrating Painted Lady Butterflies. Painted Lady Butterfly on Yellow Cone-flower. At least a dozen Painted Lady Butterflies feeding. I was thrilled to be blessed with a visit from dozens of these sweet little butterflies as they passed though last week. Painted Ladies seem downright social. Yellow Cone-flowers provide endless joy to these tiny butterflies. Each day I watch them go, as they leave to make their awesome trek to Mexico along with the Monarchs.

Life in the Languedoc

Life in the Languedoc. My wife says I had a mid-life crisis. She's always right. So, I ended up renovating an apartment in Carcassonne in the Languedoc region of southern France and she still works in London, which isn't right, she says. I can't believe it is ten days since I last posted a blog, which means another ten days has gone by and it still feels as if there is tons of work to do. It seems as far away from being completed as it ever was. The other family event of the week was my youngest daughter...

Life in the Lap Lane | The Seething Masses of Humanity, Soaking Wet

Life in the Lap Lane. The Seething Masses of Humanity, Soaking Wet. Big Mermaid, Small Pond. May 8, 2011. Life in the Lap Lane. This morning, after a tough month involving, in no particularly order – moving twice, being homeless for two weeks, needing to call the police, and being rejected from several jobs – my favorite lifeguard stops me on my way out of the pool. You know what we call you? He grins The Mermaid. I break into a broad smile. Who calls me that? Thanks lifeguard. Day = made. March 21, 2011.
