*some assembly required: Talk about a turnaround...
http://www.somearchitect.com/2013/09/talk-about-turnaround.html
Talk about a turnaround. Here's a cool project we're working on in Barton Hills. The existing house has an attached garage in the back with a massive concrete turnaround area that eats up all of the best parts of the amazing lot. It's pretty awful:. Our clients wanted a new kitchen and an upstairs master bedroom, and as we started sketching that out, we proposed a radical change for them: Could we take away your garage so you could have a back yard? They'll have a new bedroom up in the treetops. By now, ...

*some assembly required: Another cool Rosedale kitchen Before and After
http://www.somearchitect.com/2014/06/another-cool-rosedale-kitchen-before.html
Another cool Rosedale kitchen Before and After. The before and after shots tell the whole story of the kitchen transformation. Contractor/craftsman Dan Summerlin did an amazing job with the Ikea cabinets and finishes. Before- from the dining room. After- with a fantastic light fixture created by our client's dad! Before- not so pretty, not so functional. After- bright, open, and waaaaaay more usable. Yep, they're really Ikea cabinets! Construction is underway on Gabardine! Something old, something new.

*some assembly required: Self-Cleaning Gutters!
http://www.somearchitect.com/2010/06/self-cleaning-gutters.html
The nuns always said my mind was in the gutter, and here’s the proof. All of the water and crud washed out in a mad rush. I took the ends off of all of our gutters that day, and it worked beautifully. Later, we installed new gutters that are half-round, 6” wide. They have open ends and no downspouts. We created “splash areas” in the landscape beneath the gutter ends to handle the concentrated water flow and contoured the landscape to allow the water to get away from the house. I was going through some im...

*some assembly required: Infill housing

I was going through some images this morning to show to a client doing an infill project and thought it would be fun to put them all together here, too. These are all sketches and studies we've done in the last couple of years for various infill projects. We've created townhouses, duplexes, "Urban Cottages" and hybrids of all of the above. Many of you have seen the great freestanding cottage homes we've done with Momark Development. But we've found lots of other great ways to solve the infill puzzle.

And the award goes to. With nearly all of our work coming from referrals, we've never worried much about awards and publications (heck, we haven't even been listed in the phone book for the last ten years! So when builder Lee Mackenzie. Sent our 2009 whole-house project on Shoalwood off to NARI. For their remodeling awards program, I never imagined that we'd run the tables with it. How will we top that? Construction is underway on Gabardine! A kitchen that "fits like a mitten". The nuns always said my mi...
