WritePersona: Show, Don't Tell
http://writepersona.blogspot.com/2015/07/show-dont-tell.html
BONNIE STANARD, Blogging about Books and Writing. Sunday, July 12, 2015. Show, Don't Tell. Show, Don’t Tell. We writers hear this all the time. In other words, don’t make a habit of labeling characters or places with adjectives. Instead, describe using sensory details to draw the reader into the story. This is not to say adjectives don’t have a place in our language, but too often they’re used as a shortcut. The objective is to write in a way that evokes an experience. Instead of he was charming. WritePersona: Art Show
http://writepersona.blogspot.com/2015/08/art-show.html
BONNIE STANARD, Blogging about Books and Writing. Monday, August 10, 2015. RED PIANO TOO ART SHOW. What a day of meeting visitors, artists, and other writers! I arrived early at 9:00 AM, before the door was unlocked. My table was installed by the entrance, and as the first to see visitors, I became the greeter with "Hello, welcome to Red Piano Too." As they trailed inside, most people were reluctant to stop the traffic at my display, but many wandered the rooms and returned to ask about my books. Mary Ma...

WritePersona: Words by Design
http://writepersona.blogspot.com/2015/06/language-fanatics-i-was-just-skimming.html
BONNIE STANARD, Blogging about Books and Writing. Sunday, June 21, 2015. I was just skimming the November issue of the magazine Fast Company. Which happened to be in my kitchen when I ate breakfast. By the third or fourth page, its language was growling at me. Is it just me, or is the media getting aggressive with language? All you have to do is read cover pages on a magazine rack and you’ll be threatened with idiocy if you don’t get in the groove or at least buy the magazine. And my interpretation :.

Columbia Writers' Workshop II: Zooilla and the Art of Non-Fiction Proposals
http://columbiawritersworkshop.blogspot.com/2015/03/zooilla-and-art-of-non-fiction-proposals.html
Sunday, March 8, 2015. Zooilla and the Art of Non-Fiction Proposals. By Laura P. Valtorta. Some people live fortunate lives. I am extra fortunate, but not as fortunate as Zooilla, who has an agent, writes creative non-fiction, and teaches at the University of South Carolina. I call Zooilla “super lucky.” He makes a living writing about animals, and teaching the squirrels who attend USC. Who earns money writing about monkeys, opossums, and bees and gets free trips to India and Brazil thrown in? Zooilla is...

WritePersona: Choosing Names for Characters
http://writepersona.blogspot.com/2015/03/choosing-names-for-characters.html
BONNIE STANARD, Blogging about Books and Writing. Thursday, March 12, 2015. Choosing Names for Characters. Touched on how she chose names for her characters in a presentation at Book ‘Em NorthCarolina. Coming up with names for characters is different from choosing one for a newborn and more complicated. An infant is an unknown personality, but a writer has created and knows the traits of his characters. I’m reading Box of Delights. Contribute to the plot. She began as Lillellen until I realized I cou...

BONNIE STANARD, Blogging about Books and Writing. Friday, May 1, 2015. When I go to the kitchen, I pass my desk and throw open the curtains that screen a three-wide window. Outside beyond the deck is the marsh. This morning the tide is in and there’s something of a lake out there with marsh grass growing in thick islands about the water. By noon it will be all marsh grass with a muddy trail snaking through the roots. This is my window view at flood tide. This apartment at Shell Point? I began to enjoy fi...
