Cardiovascular disease includes the following fatal and nonfatal events: myocardial infarction, angina, coronary insufficiency, sudden and non-sudden coronary death, stroke, transient cerebral ischaemic attack, peripheral vascular disease (claudication), symptomatic left ventricular failure.

Atherosclerosis is the "hardening of the arteries" that contributes to heart attack, stroke and other cardiovascular disease. It involves the deposition of lipid into the inner lining of arteries, forming a atheromatous plaques full of cholesterol ("atheroma" comes from the Greek word for porridge, describing the consistency of the stuff inside the plaques). The plaques becomes hard (sclerosed) because of fibrous scar tissue and because of the deposition of calcium salts into them.

Blood lipids are important in cardiovascular disease because they contribute to the deposition of lipids into the lining walls of arteries that leads to arterial damage (atherosclerosis). Low-density lipoprotein (LDL) particles are the major carriers of cholesterol in blood, and they tend to deposit cholesterol into artery walls. High-density lipoprotein (HDL) particles scavenge cholesterol back out of arteries, and protect against atherosclerosis.
