Canoeing and Kayaking Excursions in the Upper Midwest. Other than the faster moving mountain creeks in the western part of the state, Split Rock Creek is easily the best place to paddle in the eastern side of South Dakota. It’s generally a bit faster than other rivers in the area (up to 10 mph in spots) and is full of shoots and runs of class 1 to class 2 rapids – depending on water levels. On the USGS website. Canoeing and Kayaking Excursions in the Upper Midwest. I lived in St. Charles, Missouri, for nearly seven years. It’s where I was first introduced to kayaking. There were really only two rivers that I spent time on: The Jack’s Fork River , and the Current River. Both rivers are located in the pristine Missouri Ozark National Scenic Riverway. And both offer spectacular day, or overnight paddling trips. I’ve been on many rivers since, and these remain my favorite – by far. Click here for many more photos!
