Kids' books: thoughts, recommendations and reviews. Book of the Week. Middle grade (age 8-13yrs). Murder in Midwinter by Fleur Hitchcock. October 30, 2016. An out-and-out thriller for children, with incredible pace and a chilly wintry feel, and twists and turns that don’t let up until the end. Hitchcock throws in small touches that make Maya’s situation feel authentic – from her aunt misremembering that her niece is a vegetarian (over and over), and her and her grandfather’s obsession with fixing m...

Kids' books: thoughts, recommendations and reviews. A Nature Story: Bees, Fish and Foxes. July 6, 2016. Some environmental good news last week when scientists declared that thinning in the ozone layer is starting to heal. But it’s not all good. Whilst the Friends of the Earth are now calculating our bee population for 2015-2016, there has been a serious decline in bee populations over the last few years. But how to explain this to children? As she travels here and there,. A gentle thrumming fills the air.

Kids' books: thoughts, recommendations and reviews. October 30, 2016. Do you have a child at primary school? Then it’s likely you’ll have been invited to an e-safety evening. Perhaps your child will have experienced an Internet Safety Day, or you’ll have signed a form with them about acceptable use of electronic devices. But how much of the information is actually absorbed? Last year an excellent title,. By the same team talks about sending nasty messages – trolling someone on the phone. In a subtle way,.

The darker side of night. York in a Day. On May 30, 2014. Pre-empting my 4.45 alarm clock, I crawled out of bed at 4.25am, had breakfast and made sandwiches for lunch. My train departed from Kings Cross at 7.08am, arriving in York at 9.25am, which gave me enough time to find my way from the station to the Yorvik museum, pre-booked for ten o’clock. From Clifford’s Tower, it was a short walk to the York Castle Museum, which featured a reconstruction of a Victorian Street. Seeing these shops and back al...

The darker side of night. All posts for the month May, 2013. On May 8, 2013. I had an appointment at the eye hospital today, which is ironic as I hate going to the doctor unless I’m so ill, I’m nagged and dragged there, metaphorically kicking and screaming. Foolishly, at my last optician’s appointment, I mentioned a couple of episodes of blurred vision and strange zigzagging light in my right eye, which eased after resting with eyes closed for half an hour. Four in the morning. In the basement of sleep.

Switzerland 2013 | the darker side of night
https://thedarkersideofnight.wordpress.com/travels
The darker side of night. Thursday 16 May 22 2013. Our taxi arrived at 10am, whisking us to Luton airport, though with the North Circular and M1 there is always the worry that it will be a slow crawl rather than a fast journey. However, we were lucky and traffic was fairly light. On the train we sat next to an elderly woman travelling to Lugano. She was originally from Austria and chatted to us (well mum mostly as my German isn’t up to much more than getting the gist of a conversation.). It took two hour...

Boats and Words and Yesterday’s Scenes | the darker side of night

The darker side of night. Boats and Words and Yesterday’s Scenes. On October 4, 2013. It’s been a busy week, full of contrasts, starting on Monday with a trip to the theatre to watch a new show, From Here to Eternity, which was very good, especially the two leading actors. Unfortunately, an eye infection meant the stage lights dazzled and irritated so I couldn’t fully appreciate impact of the slow motion scene where Hawaii is bombed. The autumn evening settles down. People jostle and push’. Thursday was ...

Technoholic | the darker side of night
https://thedarkersideofnight.wordpress.com/2013/09/28/technoholic
The darker side of night. On September 28, 2013. I confess. I’m a technoholic. I love my gadgets – phone, laptop and tablets ( a 7 and a 10 ). Why do you need two? A friend asks, not comprehending that each fulfils a different purpose. The smaller tablet is handy for carrying around in my handbag and the bigger one much more convenient for typing in Office Suite and when I’m alone in hotel rooms. If you are buying a new one can I have the smaller one? Sitting on the bus. Surfing on my phone. Address neve...

http://awfullybigblogadventure.blogspot.com/2015/05/being-paid-and-writers-confidence.html
Thursday, 21 May 2015. Being paid and a writer's confidence. They were wonderful. They made me practice saying 'yes, I would love to come. I charge the standard rates.'. Then, barely quarter of an hour later, whilst @chaletfan was standing nearby, a teacher approached me, asked me if I did school visits and I said 'yes, but I would have to be paid,' she said 'of course! The night before I could not sleep. How could I dare to charge such a huge amount for an hour? Then I spoke. It went so well. I ...Anne,...
