MulchMaid: June 2015

http://mulchmaid.blogspot.com/2015_06_01_archive.html

Muckraking at Longview Ranch. Wednesday, June 24, 2015. Wednesday Vignette - the pollinators have arrived! I showed this huge, crazy Salvia ( S. desoleana. For Bloom Day last week, noting that it didn't seem to be attracting pollinators. Well, how that has changed! This week bees, wasps and butterflies seem to hover around it constantly. One big bee has been vigorously defending "his" flowers - even against me - so much so that I couldn't get a picture of him. Links to this post. Thursday, June 18, 2015.

MulchMaid: April 2014

http://mulchmaid.blogspot.com/2014_04_01_archive.html

Muckraking at Longview Ranch. Tuesday, April 15, 2014. Garden Bloggers' Bloom Day - April 2014. Let's get right to April's lovely flowers at Longview Ranch, shall we? First up, one of my favorites: Lewisia cotyledon. And here it is with a pinker companion from the same series. Not to be upstaged by the newcomers, Camellia. April Kiss' is still hanging in there with a few perfect blossoms. Reappeared, like magic! The last of the species tulips, Tulipa dasystemon. Already planted in the Northwest Territory.

Muckraking at Longview Ranch. Wednesday, April 22, 2015. Earth Day in the Northwest Territory. I remember the first Earth Day. I guess that dates me, but I feel privileged to have witnessed the formalization of the embrionic environmental movement on April 22, 1970. Each of the following years has brought both veneration and abuse to the earth in seeming equal amounts. It's been 45 years since that first Earth Day. Have we learned the lessons we should have? Our regional natives are happy and flowering.

MulchMaid: June 2014

http://mulchmaid.blogspot.com/2014_06_01_archive.html

Muckraking at Longview Ranch. Friday, June 27, 2014. I like big leaves and I cannot lie. Although a few of my big leaves are evergreen, in summer, I love all my big-leafed plants even more. I just want a jungle of them around me when it's hot. Here's Trachycarpus fortunei. I like the ones I have to look up to, like Fatsia japonica. My developing Tetrapanax nursery of leaves. Upright big leaves are great, too. Here's Zantedeschia. The leaves of Eucomus pallidiflora. Will get even bigger as summer rolls on.

MulchMaid: February 2015

http://mulchmaid.blogspot.com/2015_02_01_archive.html

Muckraking at Longview Ranch. Thursday, February 19, 2015. Oops, I did it again: Bloom Day, February 2015. February's Bloom Day has come and gone, and here I am posting late - again. I'm not even going to bore you with so-called excuses (like the Northwest Flower and Garden Show) from last weekend. I'll just launch right into my flowers. Many of the "almost" blooms of January are beautifully full this month. Daphne odora. Also pretty in pink, Arctostaphylos. It's a welcome sight out our deck door. This o...

Just a girl with a hammer: August 2014

http://www.justagirlwithahammer.com/2014_08_01_archive.html

My Mighty Life List. Friday, August 15, 2014. Garden bloggers' bloom day, August 2014. I have friends, friends who don't garden, who ask me, "What's new? What have you been up to? The kids from three doors down wander by and I mutter, "Look at how the bumbles keep to the agastache while the honeybees feed on the sedum. And I don't even know what these tiny guys are on the tithonia." They no longer like talking to me because they are teenagers now and also, I'm rambling about bees. Two years ago and it pr...

Just a girl with a hammer: Why I love Yard Rents and craigslist

http://www.justagirlwithahammer.com/2012/04/why-i-love-yardrents-and-craigslist.html

My Mighty Life List. Monday, April 9, 2012. Why I love Yard Rents and craigslist. It was sunny this weekend! I'm so full of love and Vitamin D right now. I had been holding off on reserving a sod cutter for the weekend to see if the weather was actually going to be dry, so I got the 2-4pm delivery spot from Yard Rents. So with just 45 minutes (and a sprinkling of mulch) we went from this:. And I got two responses. By the next afternoon all of these were gone. We went to brunch and came back to an...I bor...

Garden stuff – around town | KnorQ's Kitchen

https://knorq.wordpress.com/2015/06/10/garden-stuff-around-town

Garden stuff – around town. Char and I hit up the Montavilla Farmers’ Market. On Sunday. We bought some tasty sausages from Scratch Meats, cherries and iced coffee then took a stroll around the neighborhood. This one street in particular had some flower lovers. Gordon – who lives in the house below saw me outside with my camera and came out to investigate. He was kind enough to invite me to view the lovely backyard which he has been cultivating for years with his wife. June 10, 2015. Laquo; Previous Post.

We garden on the green side of the Cascades in the Pacific Northwest. Friday, November 7, 2014. Mum-vember at Lan Su Chinese Garden. If you are looking for something "garden worthy" to do in Portland this weekend, come enjoy the fall color and the lovely chrysanthemums at Lan Su Chinese Garden. Even though I love coming to the garden for the Mum display, my favorite activity is to just walk the paths, check out the plants up close and enjoy the intense oranges, yellows and reds of the changing leaves&#46...

Blog-on Rainy Side Gardener: Strategies for Working in the Garden during the hot, dog days of Late Summer

http://www.rainysidegardeners.com/2014/09/strategies-for-working-in-garden-during.html

We garden on the green side of the Cascades in the Pacific Northwest. Monday, September 15, 2014. Strategies for Working in the Garden during the hot, dog days of Late Summer. Siting on this bench, enjoying my morning coffee on a lazy Sunday morning, I contemplated which garden activities to tackle first. I can feel the warm summer breezes and tickling foliage of a nearby bamboo ( Fargesia Robusta. I could sit here with a good book, listening to the Aspen, Populus tremuloides. With the sprinkler on in th...

We garden on the green side of the Cascades in the Pacific Northwest. Thursday, July 3, 2014. The Good, the Bad and the Bugly. Flash Back Thursday (2010). Insects are an integral part of the garden, the good, the bad and the bugly. I learned many years ago, that the best way to keep pests from becoming a major problem in my garden is to strike a balance by including them all. It’s a fascinating miniature world. Blog-on Rainy Side Gardener: January 2015

http://www.rainysidegardeners.com/2015_01_01_archive.html

We garden on the green side of the Cascades in the Pacific Northwest. Thursday, January 29, 2015. I am not ready for spring yet! It’s raining again. The Pacific Northwest is. Famous for gray skies and drizzly rain. Although we could really use a big winter storm that would dump lots of snow in the mountains, I am grateful for this past weekend. The sun was shining, the sky was blue and the temperature was a balmy 50 degrees fahrenheit. Some of the shrubs are starting to bud up. What’s going on? Are you r...
