Baby Names from Yesteryear: Operatic Dramatic
http://www.babynamesfromyesteryear.com/2014/05/operatic-dramatic.html
Friday, 2 May 2014. The BBC are doing an entire season on the 18th century which has made me super excited, as you can imagine. We're only three shows in but it's oh so good - if you're an 18th century history geek obviously. So far, they have concentrated on George Frideric Handel. Born in 1685, who is considered to be one of the most accomplished opera composers in history. But it's his operas I want to focus on. The names he gave his characters are wild! From the 1727 opera Admeto. She might easily be...

Baby Names from Yesteryear: Norwegian Delights
http://www.babynamesfromyesteryear.com/2014/06/norwegian-delights.html
Thursday, 12 June 2014. I thought nothing could top the Icelandic Delights but now I don't know! I'm really enjoying these Norwegian names. Like with the previous Delights, they were taken from baptism records from 1780-1880. I've been concentrating on the Delight series for a while now (I get obsessive over things.) so I promise there will be a break and I'll change gears for a bit! Image: Dancer in Blue by Edgar Degas. Baby Names from Yesteryear: Popular Names of the Georgian Era
http://www.babynamesfromyesteryear.com/2012/07/popular-names-of-georgian-era.html
Friday, 27 July 2012. Popular Names of the Georgian Era. Most people come to Names Yesteryear to search for what names were popular in such and such a year in England. I, unfortunately, do not have access to official data that would make that sort of thing easy to access. The Gentleman’s Magazine. Wedding announcements, which could very well indicate popularity. More so, though, it is a good indicator of what names were used in the elite classes of England, for the Magazine. Mary, Maria, Marianne (Maryan...

Baby Names from Yesteryear: Icelandic Delights
http://www.babynamesfromyesteryear.com/2014/06/icelandic-delights.html
Saturday, 7 June 2014. This has to be my favourite of the Delights thus far! For an English speaker, the names below are so exquisitely unusual. The name nerd in me just drools and drools. They were taken from a number of Iceland baptism records from 1780-1880. I just love that I came across so many Indianas in Iceland, with the earliest one being born in February 1834. Next one in the series will be Norway! Image: Ballet Dancers in the Wings by Edgar Degas. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom).

Baby Names from Yesteryear: Popular Names in the 1850s
http://www.babynamesfromyesteryear.com/2014/04/popular-names-in-1850s.html
Tuesday, 22 April 2014. Popular Names in the 1850s. Since there have been 25 Gentleman's Magazine posts thus far, I decided it was time to look a wee bit closer at them. Because I have recently been re-acquainting myself with the 1850s, I thought this was a good place to start. But let me just clarify the title above quickly. Thirdly and lastly, these names appeared in a magazine targeted at the elite and written by the elite and therefore don't necessarily represent the population as a whole. Just a ste...

http://www.babynamesfromyesteryear.com/2014/07/american-names-from-1790.html
Friday, 18 July 2014. American Names from 1790. In keeping with my list obsession, I thought I would keep going but this time with male names. I can't actually believe it but my last 9 post have concentrated exclusively on female names, and that's not great. So, here is a long list of late 18th century American male names. These names were taken from the first US census of 1790. It's quite an eccletic mix. American Names from 1790. American Names Boy Names Eighteenth Century Names from History.
