Nearly Irish?

Monday, 10 August 2015. My Irish experience from A to Z: H for.Hairdresser. On Monday, August 10, 2015. Afraid of the hairdresser? Don't be. You'll never come out looking like that! Judging by the amount of posts on Facebook about finding a French speaking hairdresser in Dublin, it looks like a touchy subject. Somehow, the majority of French girls seems to be afraid of getting their hair done in this country. Wednesday, 5 August 2015. My Irish experience from A to Z: G for. Gibney's. Existential questions ~ Nearly Irish?

http://www.nearlyirish.blogspot.com/2015/06/my-irish-experience-from-to-z-e.html

Monday, 29 June 2015. On Monday, June 29, 2015. Sometimes I think too much. Way too much. After so many years living here, there are still some puzzling questions about the Irish way of life going through my mind now and again. Not important ones, like trying to understand the ins and outs of the Irish tax system, but rather small cultural differences that I still don't have an answer for (and Wikipedia neither in some cases). Why are pillows square in France but rectangular in Ireland? Why are there shu...

A taste of the future ~ Nearly Irish?

http://www.nearlyirish.blogspot.com/2015/07/a-taste-of-future.html

Sunday, 19 July 2015. A taste of the future. On Sunday, July 19, 2015. Doing nothing on holidays is easy.Doing nothing at home is scary! Yesterday we got a taste of what life could look like when we retire (or at least when the kids leave the house). And it wasn't pretty. The first few days back were easy. It was mid-week, we were both working and the routine didn't change too much. Except I slept half an hour more every morning and didn't have to take care of anyone else but me. Pure bliss. Then my husb...

Memories of Bastille Day ~ Nearly Irish?

http://www.nearlyirish.blogspot.com/2015/07/memories-of-bastille-day.html

Wednesday, 15 July 2015. Memories of Bastille Day. On Wednesday, July 15, 2015. A good few years ago in the French embassy for Bastille Day. Back in Brittany, the 14th of July falls around the same time as a traditional festival taking place in my town, so we usually celebrate our local culture more than the French revolution, and this means I have celebrated Bastille Day a lot more in Ireland than in France. The atmosphere was electric, everybody was dancing to the beats of the DJ, and I have never seen...

January 2015 ~ Nearly Irish?

http://www.nearlyirish.blogspot.com/2015_01_01_archive.html

Sunday, 25 January 2015. Connemara: How a French singer made me think it was a county! On Sunday, January 25, 2015. If you ask a French tourist what is the place he wants to visit the most in Ireland, he will undoubtedly tell you "The Connemara". You might wonder why. After all, there are so many beautiful landscapes and sites to visit in Ireland so why do French people seem to be obsessed with the Connemara? However, I have a major issue with some of the lyrics. Michel Sardou made me look like a foo...

Sometimes pretending not to speak English can backfire... ~ Nearly Irish?

http://www.nearlyirish.blogspot.com/2013/12/sometimes-pretending-not-to-speak.html

Tuesday, 3 December 2013. Sometimes pretending not to speak English can backfire. On Tuesday, December 03, 2013. Anyway, my sister came over from France last week and we went shopping. In the Shopping Centre, there were a lot of young people going around with "charity buckets". It's very common at this time of the year, but my sister was very surprised as this doesn't happen in France at all. I guess French people are not as generous as the Irish ones. I have to say, I was impressed because his French wa...

The Narcissistic Expat Diaries: From Iowa to Ireland: Summer Writing

http://iowa2ireland.blogspot.com/2015/07/summer-writing.html

Wednesday, July 22, 2015. Just back from a memorable trip to Vienna and Lower Austria (see my series of live public travel journals over on Five Suitcases. My to-do list is longer than ever. After a visit to Dublin's brand-new Teeling Whiskey Distillery, I wrote a review. But hadn't yet included it in The Frugal Guide: Dublin. I've since rectified that situation, and the review is in the most recent edition. List, and I completed an interview. Speaking of the book, work continues, but slowly. I've be...

The Narcissistic Expat Diaries: From Iowa to Ireland: Fishing the Dodder

http://iowa2ireland.blogspot.com/2013/08/fishing-dodder.html

Friday, August 16, 2013. We are currently preparing a whole slug of blog posts recapping our month in internet darkness. With all the extra time I had while Sara was at work, I was able to get in some serious fishing, but first- I needed to find a few things. One of the first requirements for fishing (called angling. First and largest is the River Liffey. Big, wide, deep, filthy. NEXT! I asked my self. Hmm. Hold some kind of fish, clearly. In these pools and in even more picturesque urban countryside...

Dubliner In Deutschland: Other expats come and go but I'm still here

http://dublinerindeutschland.blogspot.com/2015/06/other-expats-come-and-go-but-im-still.html

Just a girl from Dublin, Ireland, living in southern Germany with my German husband blogging about my experiences. Saturday, June 20, 2015. Other expats come and go but I'm still here. One of the problems with making friends with other expats is that a lot of them are only living in Germany temporarily and eventually move back to their home countries (or some place else). In the almost five years I've lived here I've had to say goodbye countless times and it doesn't get any easier. I guess it's just a do...

The Narcissistic Expat Diaries: From Iowa to Ireland: Dublin Waterways Bird Survey

http://iowa2ireland.blogspot.com/2015/07/dublin-waterways-bird-survey.html

Wednesday, July 1, 2015. Dublin Waterways Bird Survey. Birds Our garden neighbors, our pesky pigeons, and our favorite singers. Most people – including me – don't usually take much notice of most of our everyday birds. Sparrows buzz by as nondescript chirruping and singing gives us an unspecific audible backdrop to a summer's day. A recent push by Dublin City Council. Is trying to change the casual way most Dubliners see their feathered friends, especially those in and around our urban waterways. The swa...

The Waltons Go Irish. Canadian/Irish words and expressions we've learned. Tuesday, 4 August 2015. For Canadians and Americans. We found our rental car and after a quick stop at the grocery store (where we were stunned with the cheap prices - a decent bottle of wine can be purchased for less than €2! We found our way up the twisty roads to the villa. They were dipped into the sea a few times and then landed gracefully back on the boat. I have no photos but they both loved it! Most of our days though start...

The Waltons Go Irish. Canadian/Irish words and expressions we've learned. Sunday, 16 August 2015. It's been busy around here lately. We are soaking in the last of the summer days. I love having the kids home, I could use another month before school goes back. I do not look forward to schedules, homework, packing lunches and washing uniforms. So for now we are avoiding all things school and enjoying the last bit of summer holidays. At the match :). She was disgusted to learn she had to mix it by hand.
