A personal work journal. Installing openaddresses-machine in a virtualenv. Trying to get a server up running OpenAddresses in a controlled environment. I’m normally very sloppy and install everything as root in /usr, but I figured I should use virtualenv this time. Machine actually has a very nice Chef setup and bootstraps itself regularly in EC2 and Travis contexts, but I’m stubborn and doing it my own way. Install openaddresses-machine and it’s simple dependencies. Sudo apt-get install libffi-dev.

A personal work journal. Ubiquiti Unifi access points. Boy, bad first impression of a product. I got a Ubiquiti wireless access point. Figured I could set it up in 10 minutes and go; what could be easier? And the SSL certificate doesn’t work. The software itself seems useful but complex. The manual. I think it was as simple as going through the basic config of the controller software (username, password, wifi settings), then choosing the Devices tab and clicking “adopt” on the access point. A personal work journal. Using jq to minify JSON. The swiss army knife of JSON tools, can easily be used to minify a JSON file. Jq -c . input.json. My music stops playing when I write a large video file to my server. More technically, when I write 10MB/sec via NFS to my Ubuntu 14.04 server, the Samba server on the same host (and same disk) stops serving files reliably to my Sonos system. Setting up motion and an Axis camera. A few months back I bought a simple network camera. The camera is an Axis M1034-W.

No huge insights, just looks neat. This router from HooToo is amazing: $18 for the HooToo Tripmate Nano. Ethernet in, 802.11 b/g/n out, and it acts like a router, bridge, can even serve SMB with a USB disk. And the thing is about 2×2 inches, less than half the size of a pack of cards. $18! A personal work journal. Observed location accuracy in iOS. I learned about the project Queering the Map. Simple project to let people share their LGBT experiences on a map. I like the anonymous confessional aspect of it, also the visibility and power of LGBT people sharing our experiences. I liked it so much I made my own visualization: Queering the Heatmap. Screenshot below. Not sure the heatmap setup is quite right, but I got tired of tinkering with gradients. This blog post is so self-deprecating!
